The story features an interesting plot twist at the end. n terms of performance, I'd have to say Willis was great-much better than he was in The Siege. Here, he's understated and sensitive, a psychiatrist trying to help a boy because he failed terribly in another, similar case. Osment is even better, perfectly playing a child tormented by visions of the dead, never once being trite or cute. The movie itself is much better and original than your average horror flick. However, it does suffer from a rather slow pace and some other horror cliches (scary music announcing the entrance of the ghosts, who are always bloody and menacing). What bothered me the MOST about this movie was the way Osment spends most of the movie cowering in terror. This is what makes this film disturbing. When Tina Turner was being beaten by her husband in What's Love Got To Do With It, it was painful to watch. When Osment is being emotionally battered by the spirits in The Sixth Sense, it's MUCH worse. We've ALL had times in our lives when we were afraid and alone, so we all can relate to Osment's predicament without director M. Night Shyamalan tormenting Osment's character so much. This film is more disturbing not because it's so scary but because you get to see a child being treated so terribly. It's definetly a good film, but it's too crude and excessive in its attempt to reach for your heartstrings. If you're easily scared or bothered by seeing people suffer, DON'T see this film. If you're not, and you want to see a more polished and subtle horror flick, you might want to check it out.
Good review...I concur. That plot twist at the end is a really good one too--made up for the slow pace of the film!

I think the ghosts are unrealistic. I don't think that people appear bloody and frightening after death. That was the only part that really bothered me. I did love the twist at the end of the movie. Nice touch!

I noticed that in the last scene the wife's (Anne I believe) was visible. the visible breath was a sign that the ghosts were angry. so why could you see it? was he angry or what? any input would be wonderful

I didn't get the end either, but in so many reviews they say that in the very last scene, there's a neat plot twist, and in one review they said that the psychologist Willis plays was dead the whole movie, and only the boy can see or interact with him. I didn't get that, but that must have been the plot twist everyone was so keen about, and that must be why we can see the breath at the end.

Perhaps after their problems are solved they will no longer appear distressed. I think the ghosts were not trying to torment the child as much as to contact him since they were aware that he could see them. The boy and Willis were effective in their parts. It is a movie to see more than once. The ending sure took me by surprise.
