I think critics just want to see how bad they can insult someone that's just a little sub-par. They also want to come off as being extremely clever and funny. There was a book review I read that said: "If you sat a million monkeys down at typewriters, one would write Hamlet and the other 999,999 would write this."

I heard something similar; that one million monkeys at one million typewriters typing away for one million years (notwithstanding age or death) and they will write the complete works of Shakespear.

I just saw it and enjoyed it greatly. There was one time that Carlotta's singing voice (not her own) was noticeably different from her speaking voice, and the phantom's voice was not as good as it could have been. The phantom's voice was the most notable deficiency in the movie. I tried to make allowances by thinking that with the phantom's background that he wouldn't be expected to have a good voice, but in the end, it would have been better to have a better singer.

The costumes, scenes, and effects were spectacular.

I felt that more of the story came through than had in the play. Christine's confusion seemed more real, her sweetheart less shallow.

I wish I could see the play. At the very least it would give me something to compare against.

I absolutely adored the costume and set design, anyone else feel the need to buy the opera house and move in?

i loved this movie, i had attempted reading the book once and then the play and gave up, though now i've seen the movie, i'll have to try again!
the music was spectacular, i went and bought the soundtrack the same day. I didnt think the phantom was that bad. i mean, i dont know much about music, but he sounded alright to me *shrug* eh, either way i recognise the difficulies they would have had in finding actors that suited the roles that they were needed for.
cinematography was stunning, especially in the opening sequence with the chandelier... wow

Yeah, cinematography was spectacular. But I am an enemy of the phantom they chose, and will likely be so until I'm too old to remember why. But at least you liked him.

I have a friend who read Phantom a book concerning The Phantom of the Opera.

*grin* fair enough- this is a question for you,if you could have any actor/singer to play the phantom- regardless of singing/acting talent who would it be?

No. This is concerning the new one with the bad Phantom that was nominated for the Best Song Oscar.

But I do want to see the old one, though. It looks like it would be interesting.
