New book's out 31st July 02 to match HP and Rowling's birthdays, called HP and The Order of the Phoenix -- I'm looking forward to that if not the next film:)

WooHoo, Finally word on when it's due out, thanks Ajelina.

Any idea if it's gonna be as big or bigger than Goblet of Fire?

I heard, can't remember where, that it would be shorter, more like books two and three. I'm surprised that Goblet has appeared in paperback yet.

I SAW THE MOVIE!!!

Yes, probably the last person in the country to go. And it was brilliant. I loved it from the first second. Made up for all my disappoinments with the Lord of the Rings.

I'd put up a SPOILERS notice--but geez, who could be left that hasn't seen this?

There were really outstanding performances in this movie. Richard Harris and Maggie Smith, as Dumbledore and McGonagall, were great from the very first scene, when she asks him "Is it true?" and he sighs "Yes, the good as well as the bad." Robbie Coltrane was a perfect Hagrid. I think he and Daniel Radcliffe established that essential bond of friendship on the screen that was so important in the book. However, I also have to say that Rupert Grint practically stole the movie as Ron Weasley. When he takes charge of the wizard chess game, it's terrific. And Emma Watson was appropriately annoying as Hermione "She's a Nightmare!" Granger. :)

There were terrific character touches all the way through this film. And they brought out things in the books that I hadn't completely grasped til I saw them on the screen. For instance, Alan Rickman, as Snape, was constantly staring at Harry as if he was seeing a ghost--and then I remembered that Harry supposedly looks exactly like his father--Snape's classmate--at the age of 11. Then there was Olivander's, when Harry ends up getting the wand that was paired with his arch-enemy's. And of course we learn much later in the books that Harry did in fact become a kind of quasi-twin of Voldemort, and therefore would get a similar wand. The part with the Sorting Hat was also great--I thought it was a nice touch to have the hat speak out loud--so that Snape and Malfoy (the whole school in fact) could hear that Harry didn't want to go into Slitherin.

And although I've heard criticism of the Quidditch match, I thought it was unbeatable. It looked like a real sporting event! Plus the earlier scene, where Oliver Wood introduces Harry to the concept of Quidditch, was one of the best in the whole film.

And then there was Diagon Alley--very cool--the moving staircases--a nice addition--and that incredibly spectral figure in the Forbidden Forest--much more alarming, I thought, than the Nazgul in Rings. And the troll fight in Stone beat out the one in the Mines of Moria--for one thing, the troll was infinitely more troll like.

They seemed to have toned down Draco Malfoy's character a bit--he seems to be more of a stool pigeong than a bully in the movie, but that was okay. I was glad too that they kind of toned down the Durseley's and made them more believable. Their cruelty in the book wouldn't have worked well on film. And the letter scene! Another great one.

In fact, in the whole film, I had only two minor quibbles, and they were very minor. One was a bad cut from the letter scene to the isolated shack on the island--probably a little jolting to people who hadn't read the book. And the other was having Harry catch the Golden Snitch more or less by accident. Slightly undermined the fact that he's a natural as a Seeker.

But who cares.

This is one I want to see again. And I had to reread the whole opening and the whole conclusion of the book, because I had forgotton so much of it!

Iz! Yup to all of what you said. I had to reread Sorcerer's Stone as well. It was fun to be introduced to Ron and Hermione, and everyone else, with the visual of the film in mind.

This from http://www.countingdown.com

The Birmingham Evening Mail has received a report that Zoe Wanamaker's character, Madam Hooch, has been written out of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets after she complained that the actors were severely underpaid. Apparently, she is the only member of the original cast not to be in the sequel. She is rumored to have earned a mere £40,000 for her role in the first Harry Potter movie.

More info from http://www.countingdown.com about Zoe Wanamaker's character, Madam Hooch.

A week ago, we posted an unverified report that Zoe Wanamaker's character (Madam Hooch) had been written out of the second Harry Potter movie. Thanks to the Sunday Express, it now appears that this is indeed true. Still debatable, however, is the reason the character got the ax:

The 52-year-old daughter of the late director Sam Wanamaker described Warner Bros as "notoriously mean" and called the salary "terrible".

She added: "Some actors signed three-film deals but the money was so crap I was insulted so just signed for one. If they want me for a second film they'll have to up their rates."

She claimed "they don't like actors having power", treated them like "third world citizens" and said most of the GBP 110 million movie budget went on creating special effects such as the scenes with flying broomsticks.

Now Warner Bros have decided to drop Madam Hooch from the second movie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, due out in November.

All the other original, mostly British cast, including Robbie Coltrane as gentle giant Hagrid, John Cleese as Nearly Headless Nick, Richard Harris as Hogwarts' head Professor Dumbledore, Dame Maggie Smith as Dumbledore's deputy Professor McGonagall and Alan Rickman as Professor Snape, are currently filming the new movie around Britain.

Wanamaker was also reported to have been angry that many of the actors did not receive any extra payments or royalties for the use of their images in spin-off merchandising and computer games.

A Warner Bros spokeswoman insisted that Wanamaker's character had not been axed but was not in the second script, although she appears in the book.

She said: "We haven't dropped Zoe - it's simply that we did not need her character this time.

"In the first film Madam Hooch taught the pupils how to ride their brooms and they've learned that now.

"We can't put every element in the film. We have to be selective or it would be six hours long. We had to struggle to cut the first one down to two-and-a-half hours."

It is not the first dispute about the stars' salaries. Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter, was originally offered only GBP 75,000 and GBP 125,000 for the first sequel. However, the actors' union Equity renegotiated new terms which have since made the 12-yearold a millionaire.

Well, I can't find the General Discussion topic, so I'll post here.

WooHoo, I got my copy of the VHS last night, of course I watched it as soon as I got home.

Someone, I believe Iznardy, presented the idea that Snape may be still an Agent of Voldemort.

I don't think that could be true, because in Sorcer's stone Snape says to Qirrel, "Decide where your loyalties lie, you don't want me for your enemy. During the first read through or the first viewing of the movie, obviously we all thought that Snape was the bad guy harrassing poor Qirrel. Well now we know, Qirrel was actually the bad guy, which meant Snape was threatening Qirrel, not to side with Voldemort.

Nice couple of scenes added to the VHS, after the movie ends. Why they didn't just plug them in where they belong is beyond me, but a nice treat none the less.

The introduction of Snape to the Potions class when Snape is harrassing Harry. In the additional scene Harry makes a smart Alec crack that Hermione wanted to answer the questions and it was a pity not to let her, and Snape goes on to explain the answers to the questions, something we didn't get to see at the theater.

Second new scene was when Harry and Gang figured out who Nicholas Flamel was.

Probably not even 5 minutes new footage, wonder why they left those two scenes out?

Ya know..if you think about it...Snape may have been talking to Qirrel, but Voldemort was on the back of his head so Voldemort knows where Snapes loyalties lie and Snape did not know it. Atleast not at the time.

Yeah, I think iz pretty well set us straight on that score. Don't know how Snape is going undercover. I'm thinking he has some way of disguising himself. Dumbledore has a good reason to trust Snape, I think, and even though Snape is a creep, he's rather heroic. The good news is, some day JKR will finish book 7, and we'll know it all finally.

The new issue of Entertainment covers "Secret Chamber". I have't read bought a copy yet.

I don't think there's any way that Snape is a Voldemort plant. As Nomad says above, everyone knew at Hogwarts knew that Voldemort was after the Philsopher's Stone. Snape would have been aiding Quirrell, not threatening him, if he had been working for Voldemort. And the Dark Lord KNOWS Snape has changed sides, so I think he has just as clearly marked him down to be killed, as suggested at the end of Goblet.

I accessed it through SciFi Wire.

Dobby looks fantastic, and Kenneth Brannagh looks great as Gilderoy Lockhart.

I was watching this again, and a couple questions came to mind about wands.

Harry was able to do magic before he had his wand- removing the glass at the zoo, for example. I don't see there being classes though for wandless magic or anyone using wandless magic. In fact, later on when Harry loses his wand it is upsetting to him and seems that he can't use magic. Does anyone know about why wands are needed? To augment or focus the magic?

I was also wondering about people using other people's wands. Harry tried a couple wands when he was buying his, and they were unsuitable. What's the story on using someone else's wand?

Hi Bmat,

Yes, my understanding is the wand is used to focus your magic. Harry's magic prior to attending Hogwarts, was unfocused magic, that just sort of happened due to his emotions. If a trained wizard tried to, for example, remove the glass at the zoo, it wouldn't neccessarily come off properly. Dumbledore is the only character we see regularly using wandless magic, deliberately (Well aside from House Elves, they're not allowed to use wands, as wands help you focus your magic)

Yes, you can use another person's wand, but, your magic won't neccessarily be as good. Ron inherited an older brother's wand, and Neville inherited his father's wand. We haven't seen a dramatic increase in Ron's magical Prowess since getting his own, we'll see what happens once Neville is chosen by a wand in Book 6. If a wand chooses you, it's more likely to be tuned to your specific specialty in magic, or magical personality if you will (For example Lily's wand was good for charms, and Lily was an expert charm maker).

HP cast member sighting.

I put BBCA on and saw the end of a sitcom called My Family. I thought the female lead looked just like Madame Hooch in the Harry Potter movies. and sure enough- Zoë Wanamaker plays both parts.

Easter Egg in Sorcerer's Stone

It takes several steps but takes you to 7 scenes that didn't make the theaters.

Quote:

On Disc 2, for the 7 deleted scenes: 1) In the Main Menu click the Owl - Diagon Alley. 2) To enter, choose the bricks in clockwise order from the left. If you make 4 mistakes, it will open anyway. 3) Once in Diagon Alley, hit the Key, located at the bottom of the Gringotts sign. 4) Click on the Coins. Then hit the Arrow to go back to Diagon Alley. 5) Click on the Ollivanders sign. 6) Pick a Wand Box, until the wand chooses you and then you'll be sent back to Diagon Alley. 7) Click on the Arrow to go back to the Main Menu. 8) Click the Wand on the table - Classrooms. 9) Place the cursor over the word- Transfigurations under the Cat and hit DOWN Arrow (or simply move the cursor directly to the *H* under the fire and skip to 12). 10) The two Owls under the fire will be highlighted. Hit Enter. 11) The *H* above the Owls is highlighted. Hit Enter. 12) Click on the Flute, above Fluffy's three heads. 13) Click on the tiny key with the bent wing tip at the door. Or pick any key. When you miss four times the correct key will be shown in the center of the screen, much much larger than the others. Click it. 14) Click on the short, round, yellow bottle in the back. Do this fast or you'll land in the Hospital Wing anyway. 15) In the Mirror of Erised click on the Stone. Submitted by Rikki

Thanks to Moviemistakes for this quote.
