Midnight Predator
By Amelia Atwater-Rhodes

Delacorte Press

Turquoise, hunter of Vampires, is hired to destroy the head of the rebuilt Midnight, home of Vampires and their human slaves. Turquoise has more at stake than money since the vampire Draka had killed her family and enslaved and misused Turquoise in her younger days. To gain entry into Midnight, Turquoise arranges to have herself and her colleague sold as slaves to the Vampires.

The intensive training that Turquoise has undergone helps her stay alive in pursuit of her goal. She has flashbacks of the brutal treatment she had received from Draka. She befriends a young human slave boy. She is romantically attracted to a vampire, Jaguar, who seems unusually kind for a vampire.

Even though there is violence in the book, it is not presented so strongly as to shock. Turquoise is well-drawn, but other characters are weak. The relationship with Jaguar is mildly interesting. The attachment to the boy is bland. Jeshikah, the vampire whom Turquoise was hired to destroy comes across as vicious and unpredictable, but Draka is just plain nasty.

Young people will probably enjoy the story (age 12 and up.)

Amelia is a very good writer for her age.
I met her at a convention.

It is rumored that Atwater-Rhodes types her stories and novels as the characters themselves dictate the happenings and goings on, the vampires and witches feeding into her subconscious and forcing her to type. If this proves true, I have two things to say:
1. These phantom beings are DEFINITELY not writers.
2. Amelia's not much of a writer herself if she can't see the blatantly obvious problems. In MIDNIGHT PREDATOR, as in all her books, the storyline is murky, the heroine's a bitch, loose ends pop up and usually aren't put back in place, the creaky dialogue is laughably bad, and a smothering layer of teen angst blankets each page so horribly, you have to wipe your hands when it's all over.

I think she is an excellant writer. I've loved all of her books. In the forests of the night, Demon in my view, Midnight predator, and Shattered glass.

Shattered Mirror. Sorry. Couldn't help meself.

AAR was the one who first got me interested in vampires. Unfortunately I have forbidden myself to read her. The reason I don't read her is because she will have a profound influcence on my vamp stories and characters.
She's a wonderful writer, but I think a lot of people try to imitate her, and you can definately tell when they've done that. Me, I try to be original.

I love Aubrey though.

Has anyone read 'Hawksong' yet? I know it just came out yesterday, but her books usually don't take long to get through.

I love Amelia! She is so awesome. My favorites of her books are Demon in My View and Midnight Predator. Shattered Mirror was a bit disappointing. I can't wait for her next book! Snakecharm, Falcondance, and Wolfcry are the next ones.
