I can't believe nobody mentioned him. He's the person that got me hooked on fantasy, I've got to admit, I havnt read many other fantasy books but I only just got hooked on fantasy at about the begining of this year.

I am only on the 7th book in his Xanth series but I highly recomend this series. Trust me there very good.

His BATTLE CIRCLE trilogy is a great comfy read.
I recommend that you try to find the series in the collected book called just that BATTLE CIRCLE.
It contains the three books;
Sos The Rope
Var The Stick
Neq The Sword

I love Piers! He was one of my first favorite authors. I've read all the Xanth series exc. the one following Yon Ill Wind. I also loved the Incarnations of Immortality series. Oh, and has anyone else read Bio of a Space Tyrant?

One of my favorite things about Piers is how open he is with himself. His author notes are wonderful looks into his life--his webpage also has tons of journal-type-things in them that gives us great glimpses into the person and character and life of Piers Anthony.

Agreed. I think On a Pale Horse is his best book. However, like any loooong series, it tapers off with time. Cool concept, though.

Incarnations of Immortality does taper off after the first two, but "For Love of Evil" is a standout.

I found the Xanth series faded too, with Castle Roogna possibly the most satisfying read.

Bio of a Space Tyrant had a difficult start - I mean, how many times can a ship be boarded by pirates on a trip between two planets in the Solar System? Sheesh.

Still, to confound the usual trend in series, the later books in Bio I found were pretty good.

I think Piers Anthony may be a bit sketchy on space-based SF, but on-world stuff and interaction writing he can be quite good at imo, and he does have a style of writing that makes his work quick to read.

The Adept series is my favorite. Especially the first 2 books. Great cross-over appeal.

I lost interest with Xanth after book 6.

News: Warner Brothers has bought the film rights to Piers Anthony's fantasy novel series Xanth, to be produced by Wolfgang Petersen and David Benioff, Variety reported. A Spell for Chameleon is the first book in the series, which will see its 30th installment published next year.

I have not read any of Piers Anthony stuff.....

The Xanth series (named after "PierXANTHony";) is more targeted toward YAs or even children (though older children...). It is pretty humorous stuff and quite light fantasy.

Ahh, Piers Anthony was one of my favorites. I devoured every Xanth novel I could get my hands on as a teen. It was only up to the fifth trilogy back then. Hard to believe he's been turning out a Xanth novel every year since I was born and is still making more...

Battle Circle was excellent, and Bio of a Space Tyrant one of my all time favorites. Killobyte was fun, Race Against Time was okay, and Anthonology was weird. On a Pale Horse was excellent.

Now that I'm older, his books aren't quite as magical, but that's not a criticism. I just happened upon his books at the perfect time in my life. They're truly magical if you're in the right mindset, and they're quick and easy reads.

126 books published through 2003. That's one prolific writer.

*Aldan nods* All quite true. And that also doesn't include any scripts or what have you, does it? I know he's done script work before, but not what it WAS for...
