If anyone like military sci-fi with a strong female character, I recommend reading the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. Here's the list so far...

1. On Basilisk Station
2. The Honor of the Queen
3. The Short Victorious War
4. Field of Dishonor
5. Flag in Dishonor
6. Honor Among Enemies
7. In Enemy Hands
8. Ashes of Victory

Also, please don't forget about his two books on the character "Bahzell Bahnakson," one of which is called "The War God's Own" (I'm sorry... I can't remember the other one's name).
This series is pure fantasy, but very unusual for such. Does it have Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, Half-Elves and Humans? Yes. However, the history of the races is very nicely created, with Elves having been originally Human Sorcerers who couldn't (or wouldn't) keep control of their powers, and were given the choice of giving up those powers in exchange for immortality. Halflings were the result of a wizard war. Weber states that they were probably originally servants of evil wizards who weren't protected from the unbridled use of their power.
The main character (and the most unusual character race) is called Hradani. These people are between 6 1/2' and 8' tall, being powerfully built. They have no power of magic at all. However, all of the other races of man are quite afraid of them and hate them, because of the Rage.
This is a thing that is tied in with the main storyline, so I don't want to say too much. It is what drives the main characters (Bahzell Bahnakson and Brandark Brandarkson) in the stories.
I STRONGLY recommend these books!

Honor Harrington novels are very good. I bought he first one, On Basilisk Station after hearing some comments and having nothing else to read. I was pleasantly surprise. I am now half way into book three. They are easy to read and the characters are well written.
I would definetly recomment these books to any science-fiction fan.

I agree with the quality spoken of by v0io. David Weber has written a lot of quality fiction, particularly SciFi, but it also includes fantasy fic.

I haven't heard of David Weber before. But I'm always in the look for good books/authors. I'll look into some of his works.

David Weber's science fiction currently covers 15 novels solo-written, 4 written w/ Steve White, 2 written with John Ringo and one or two with Eric Flint. He also has written 3 fantasy novels in a world of his own creation. If you are interested in knowing where to start or what to read, ask a Weber fan, and you'll get a bit of an answer...
