I stumbled on Tamora Pierce's works when i was trying to find some relief from all of these so-called "epic fantasies" modeled on TLLR where no magic ever happens. In Tamora Pierce's works, all of the charachtars either are learning to work with magic, and there's that excuse for it not being used, or all of them have wonderful control of magic, it's in the palms of their hands, and she vividly describes them using it! her use of violence is a little annoying, and they get repetitive after you've read four or eight of them, but otherwise I'd reccomend them to any fan of fantasy and magic! Does anyone else want to read them and want to know more, or has anyone else read them and can share something?

I thought I was the only one who'd heard of her! She was one of the main influences with my writing -- not only is she easy to read but her ideas of magic are used brilliantly, especially in the Wild Magic series. She's definitely a fresh break from the "heavy guys" like Donaldson.

*lol* Well, she's under a big stigma, since her publisher's label is "children's". Sp people are like, "Well I don't want to go into the children's section of the library to get my books; I want real books!" Ugh.

It's sort of a shame, because her books are usually more readable and often more realistic or believable than those "heavy" guys, while using so much magic it would terrify those other authors! (And she's also into Witchcraft. *lol*)

Yes, I noticed the witchcraft aspects in it -- especially Daine's father:D

Again, that was an influence to my own writing -- but I decided I wanted to look at a more adult view of fantasy.

First I read one - think it was called The Magic in the Weaving????? - but I found it a bit boring. I read the Wild magic series then after the insistence of a friend, and I really liked - except the Daine/Numair match was a bit predictable, and he was like 25 years older than her.
But I thought especially the third and fourth ones were really good, not too serious but very enjoyable.

She started with the Alanna series, and I think she only got better in the Wild Magic series.

If you like fantasy of the medieval kind, I suggest you try her.

She is great for description, so that you really understand what's happening. If you haven't tried her yet, you should.

The Alanna series is a wonderful read and investment! You won't mind reading them over and over, and you will be able to find a lot of people to lend them to. Suitable for children, expect for the sexual liasons of the main character. Infact, that was truly the only problem I could find in the books--the heroine couldn't make up her mind, and kept bed-hopping.

I just started another Tamora pierce thread, and i can't believe I didn't see this one first! The only problem i found with them is how repetitve they get after the first eight books or so; and I love how well she uses magic! There's a few anachronisms, but we don't care about those.

First test... hmmm Thats the Kel series me thinks... After that is Page, then Squire and the most recent is Lady Knight.

Tammy's next Tortall series is going to be about Alannas daughter i think... Alianne. Trickster Choice, It comes out Fall 2003 And theres a dateless series about the provost's dog thats going to take place a few hundred years before alanna

And theres supposedly going to be a series about the circle reuiniting if you've read those.
