Well thats a bit vauge, no offense meant, but any fan of Toklien would know what your talking about I suppose. I grew up around his works, and the first book I read of fantasy was the Hobbit, but out of the two you mention, I will go with Lord of the Rings, merely because I havent really read any of His Dark Materials and thus I can not comment.( well correction I did read it, but I was like around lets say well since age cant be typed, very young at the time, one it was complex for my age, though I understood it fairly well and two, a lot has happened in that manys years that have gone by since then lol) anyways yeah there is my say on it.
