I got this book from the post office at 10:00 this morning, and just finished it about twenty minutes ago. And that's with five hours of class and an hour-and-a-half of meal time in between. Granted, it's short -- just two-hundred-forty-seven pages -- but it's so great. Once you get past the insanity of it, that is. The premise is that two paleontologists (okay, if you know me, you know my bias) are sent back on a time-travel expedition to document the exctinction event at the end of Cretaceous. They were best friends in grad school, but recently one of them had an affair with the other's wife, which puts some tension on them right away. Anyways, they get back to the Cretaceous and find out its not anything like modern Earth -- or even how they'd expected the Cretaceous to be. Warning: Serious Spoilers Ahead S P O I L E R S The difference is due to manipulation of Earth biomes by Martian creatures. S P O I L E R S It's very fast-paced, not difficult to read at all, and entertaining to boot. Robert J. Sawyer does a great job making the premise believable, which is amazing, given how ludicrous it sounds in synopsis. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's a fan of Golden Age SF Adventure.
