Fred Saberhagen is best known for his stories about the Beserkers-intelligent killing machines developed for an ancient conflict, now running amok and trying to exterminate all life. Having recently read his books Beserker Man and Beserker Kill, I am impressed by the vast scope and descriptiveness of his writing.
Saberhagen also handles details well, as with his novel Pilgrim, detailing the exploits of a renegade time traveler during the Civil War and in Ancient Egypt. Fine details (the types of money, what hotel rooms of the time were like, the politcal machinations of the time) give this work a very realistic feel.

I have not read any of the Scifi except Pyramids. His fantasy is great.
