I highly recommend The Giver by Lois Lowry. It's a kids (young adult) book (Newberry winner), but very readable by anybody. Considering the state of sci-fi/fantasy right now, the writing level is indistinguishable from works for adults.

This is an exploration of Utopia and growing up. Just superb. Everybody should read this. I'm not kidding. I give it five smileys. :) :) :) :) :)

Not really a 'Utopia' more of a 'Negitive Utopia' if that makes any sense

There's actually a term for it: Distopia.

If you hated the ending you should read its companion, "Gathering Blue," and THEN its (The Giver's) sequel, "Messenger" (Messenger won't make sense if you don't read gathering blue)
