Posted By: ZimNova Dec 01, 2002 - 05:23 pm | | After *Out of Gas* one would think; "Will this show keep getting better?". With *Ariel* we have the answer with a resounding Yes! Jose Molina did a fine job writing this one and he has been on the Firefly BBoard answering fan questions lately too. The major thing that struck me was they're starting to develop a decent story arc. Not only with the "previously on Firefly" backstory in the teaser but with little things that are starting to show in the character development. We can start to feel for the crew and understand why they are the way they are. It's tough because we have never seen the pilot yet and the episodes are being aired out of order so we kind of have to guess in between about parts we've not seen. Can there be any doubt who's the boss aboard Serenity? As we saw with Wash when Zoe was wounded and here when Jayne gets bent out of shape about the Tams, Mal puts his foot down not takin' any lip from anybody. I like that. On Farscape it's ambiguous who's in command and on Enterprise Archer is Captain but his decisions are often questioned so they rule by committee. Why did River attack Jayne? Remember her taking the labels off the cans during *Shindig*?, well Jayne was wearing his "Blue Sun" tee shirt, the same symbol that causes her to go loco. Great line; "He looks better in red". It's a good bet that the "hands of blue" guys are somehow connected to the Blue Sun mega-corp. that controls the distribution of food stuffs throughout the Core Planets but not so much for the coloney worlds and the talk is they are also conducting experiments on Humans for the Alliance. Speaking of the Core Planets. What a change of pace eh? Simon has a job, pays well too. Only one small problem. He really does love his sister so is willing to take a major risk and ask the crew's help to better understand what the Alliance did to her. The part that Wash threw away in the junkyard sure looked a lot like the broken part that almost got 'em all killed in *Out of Gas*. That was to me a suggestion from the writers that stuff laying aroung as junk in the Core can keep you flying out in the black. Some might wonder why they can just waltz into the hospital. In a police state people relay on the government to sign, seal and deliver their security and are conditioned to mind their own business. Plus nobody's going to do anything they're not paid to do which makes it easy to fool them. Jayne cracked me up as he had worked so hard to memorize his part that he had to speak it even though it was not needed. Another good one-liner was from Zoe after she knocks out the doctor with the defibrillator; "Clear". We get to see more of the potential Firefly has as a series with the technology in the hospital. That was as futuristic as any other show, so much for this being nothing more than a hokey western set in space. If Fox gives it a chance it could rival any other SF show ever done. Lots of folks are asking why was Jayne such a traitor. Well Adam Balwin has been posting on the Firefly BBoard so in his own words: "Apparently there has been an ongoing debate with regard to Jayne's "unbetrayal" of River and Simon in "Ariel"... Well, I asked our fearless leader J.W. yesterday if I could put this confusion to rest. He said, "Go ahead monkey, dance for the geeks!" So, I hereby offer to all (with a notable nod to I.L.J. from Fireflyfans.net), the official poop: Jayne never unbetrayed Simon and River, he simply redouble-crossed the low down dirty double-crossing Fed who was intending to keep Jayne's "RE-WARD" for himself. Jayne is a mercenary after all, but he's our mercenary, and that's why I love the petulant child, "box-dropping man-ape gone wrong, thrillin' he-roics thing," that he is... A work in progress. I hope this has been cared about. 'Cuz I'm a powerful slow typer! Peace, A.B.". At the end there was real doubt that Mal would not space Jayne because you never know with a Joss Whedon show. Just like JMS, nobody's safe. Only Jayne's coming around with a clear conscience and showing remorse in asking Mal to not tell the others what he had done saved his hide. So now Simon has some kind of clue what the Alliance did to River and has the medicine to start her on the road to recovery. Summer Glau has done a fine job playing the role of the "crazy" River. Now I'm hoping we'll get a chance to see what she can really do with a clear mind. We saw what lenghts the blue hand's were willing to undertake to retrive her so she must be something special. Were they [blue hands] straight out creepy or what? Those segments were like watching one of the better X-Files episodes. Overall this was first rate entertainment. Not as developed as say Farscape [yet] but better than the product being offered by either Enterprise or Andromeda these days. ZimNova
Posted By: anime Jun 05, 2003 - 09:01 am | | I'm a recent exposie to the firefly greatness. I love the dialog and the humor mixed up with the characters. I'm glad it's becoming more then a space cowboy show that reminds me of cow boy bebop. I am curious though by what means fans are going to get this show back on the air. I can see why fox dropped it with its lesbian/bi connotations among other not so fox like qualities. When’s this show going to air on the SCI FI channel on cable? Who do I have to bribe to make it so?

Posted By: ZimNova Jun 13, 2003 - 07:57 pm | | Anime Straight up network bulldren is why Firefly was cancelled. "Time slot of death", 20:00 on Friday nights coupled with being pre-emped by the baseball playoffs just as the show was starting to build an audience resulted in less than expected ratings for Fox (spit) so they only aired 12 episodes of the 15 made. The soon-to-be-released DVD set will include all 15 plus commentary by the cast [Adam Balwin has posted some Hi-larious previews on the FF BBS] so those of us who liked the show will have the chance to collect the entire series. Firefly is yet another example of networks being driven by the ratings where they don't give a show a chance [full 22 episode season] even though they spent millions with development, casting, set design, plot development etc. As my above post demonstrates "Ariel" showed the potential that Firefly had as a series being part of Joss Whedon's stable of shows plus the makers & cast were being interactive with the fans on the shows BBoard on a regular basis. Real frelling shame Firefly, like JMS's *Crusade* was still-born by network politics. ZimNova
