Posted By: ZimNova Nov 22, 2002 - 11:17 am | | I saw this news today in the "Studio Briefing" section at the IMDb web site. It's cool people are putting so much effort into saving Farscape.
Quote:Avid fans of the canceled sci-fi series Farscape have created a commercial titled "I Am Farscape" and say they are buying time on cable outlets in 24 cities nationwide to air it during the week of Nov. 24th. The commercial, which they call "this first ever fan-produced, fan-funded television commercial," is aimed at accelerating what they claim is a grass-roots movement to save the series. In a message posted on the Save Farscape website , the show's fans acknowledge that in major cities they have only been able to buy time in the middle of the night. "But that's okay, because the goal of this project is to draw mainstream media attention to our cause."
Scape on. ZimNova

Posted By: ZimNova Dec 28, 2002 - 09:53 am | | SciFiCanadian clued me into This interview with Ben Browder. Pretty good stuff although he talks about Farscape in the past tense which is understandable in light of the situation. The cast are far too talented to remain unemployed for long, in fact Gigi Edgley already has another job with a popular series in Oz. If DK, Rockne et al had been able to pull off a deal with someone [Universal/USA Networks or whoever] by now there might have been a chance to save the show with at least a mini-series to wrap the story arc. As it stands now my only hope, I'm trying to be realistic here in light of the harsh nature of the TV biz, is a possible future feature film. Even that would be tough to put together once the former Farscape cast moves on to new projects. The only reason the Trek franchise can put together a film like *Namesis* is because most of the original cast of ST-NG are not commited to other projects, ie: not working full time on something else. We have to respect the fact that the Farscape cast are actors in the prime of their careers who have to move on in life. As Ben said in his interview, Farscape was great. A chance few actors even get to work with such a fantastic group from top to bottom creating a show that will go down in the history of the SF genre as one of the best. ZimNova

Posted By: ZimNova Jan 04, 2003 - 07:04 pm | | Yep. *Kansas* airs on the SFC on 01/10/2003. My problem being a Taurus is I'm vary neat with my tape collection and have *Unrealized Reality* queued up to be followed by *Kansas* in it's natural order [4.11/4.12]. 2 ep.'s per Fuji HQ tape on SP. Thing is, during the hiatus I used that, waiting to be used, second half of the tape to record the Firefly episode *Our Mrs. Reynolds* and there is No Frelling Way I'm taping over that! I was, at first, only taping the Firefly episodes to watch and review to do posts. Now however in light of the cancellation I wish I'd taken the same care with taping I used during Babylon & Farscape 'cause I've grown to love Firefly as a "keeper". I only have 5 of the 12 aired recorded.....Bummer! Small matter I know but having 59 tapes of Babylon [all LBX], 7 of Crusade and so far 39 of Farscape, saving Firefly has become more important.
Posted By: Nomad Jan 04, 2003 - 07:59 pm | | LoL...I hear ya Zim. Can you do a tape to tape copy to clean it up before next week? Also, I just watched a Firefly ep with something called the "Divinity Cluster" in it. It was a cool ep and I wish I had watched more.
Excuse me while I say with enormous glee, that the UK just got the episode AFTER Kansas. We got Kansas last week. I won't post any spoilers, as I'm sure you can all find some if you really want to

The Sci-Fi Channel has now officially commented on the show's cancellation to TV Guide Farscape: Sci Fi's Murder by Numbers? TV Guide Online: So, what gives? Why would you want to cancel such a rad show? Bonnie Hammer: We never wanted to cancel it. What we were trying to do was do 13 more episodes, not 22. The ratings had softened, and it was getting increasingly expensive to produce. We just couldn't make the financial deal. But we never wanted it to end when it ended. We had all intentions of doing 13 more episodes [beyond these 11] — we wanted to keep it in '03 and end it in '03. But financially, it was just too difficult to do. TVGO: In that case, why not at least do a proper wrap-up, a TV movie or something? Hammer: We looked at all the options. But with the speed in which it would have had to be done — because the set had to be broken down and the cast had to come back [from Australia, where shooting took place] and the scripts weren't written — [the cost] would have been enormous. [It would] have been almost as if we were doing [the upcoming epic miniseries] Children of Dune — and with less potential upside. We love the series... and would have liked nothing more than for it to have had a little bit more of a broad appeal. If all of those incredible fans who wrote in and sent notes and flowers and [whatnot] had actually watched it every week, we would have been able to do the 22. TVGO: You mean to tell me that Farscape doesn't have the numbers to merit a fourth season, but Stargate SG-1, which you just renewed, is attracting a big enough audience to deserve a seventh? Hammer: Yes. Take a look at our numbers on Monday nights just for the Stargate repeats. It's crazy! Before we ended the season on Stargate, we were getting a very high 1 [rating] and peaked at, I think, a 2 or a 2.1. That was for new, original episodes. [Now] our average for Stargate repeats has been unbelievable — 1.7 and 1.8 [ratings]. When Farscape was repeating, we were lucky if we got a .8. So there's a huge difference. TVGO: But Farscape is so cool. How can that be?! Hammer: Even though Stargate is sci fi, it's very broad sci fi. It's not serialized. Every episode, you can come to it whether you've watched the one before [or not]. They are self-contained. My husband is kind of an absentee watcher, and he would tune in every fifth or sixth episode and have absolutely no issues [with following the plots]. Farscape, on the other hand, got very, very serialized. It got very "in." TVGO: And that's a bad thing... ? Hammer: They had brilliant and sophisticated writing, but it was so narrow that it basically was an invitation to not tune in if you weren't totally familiar with the show. It was brilliant when you got it, and some of the characterizations were truly amazing, but it took a little too much work. Link: http://www.tvguide.com/newsgossip/insider/ DK: well when are we getting season 2 in NZ, oh well......
Posted By: ZimNova Jan 07, 2003 - 02:33 pm | | Thanks DK. Only in the TV wasteland can a show be "too smart" or too "in". Brother I'll tell ya, popular TV is on a downward spiral straight to hell. No wonder over 50% of high schoolers can't name the country that lies north of the United States!?! but I'll bet cha they can repeat every scene from the Ozzy Osborne show.
Posted By: Nomad Jan 07, 2003 - 03:01 pm | | Once again...the Neilson ratings s**k! If they had all watched? Like it was said before...They all DID watch, just not individually. Things neeed to chnge in the ratings arena!
That's The artic ain't it Zim? Good god how dumb aar TV executives? (Er, Canada btw)
Well it's the same in NZ....that Ozzy Osborne show was on in NZ, didn't watch it.....and surveys show that our high schoolers are just as dumb (no offence).... TV in NZ is go straight to hell as well.... Most nights there is nothing to watch....
Posted By: ZimNova Jan 07, 2003 - 10:20 pm | | That's right Ian. I learned a lot of geography in high school and everybody knows the artic is the easternmost province in Canada. I know a lot about Europe too. Like England & France share a common border and because of that they fought a lot of wars over the years. Modern technology makes it easier to get around Europe as well. Why you can take that new Chunnel train straight from France to Sweden. Must be nice to have supper and a glass of wine in Paris, pop over for a relaxing Swedish massage, then back home in time to watch your favorite show on the BBC1.
Posted By: Iznardi Jan 08, 2003 - 05:30 am | | You mean there's a country north of the United States? When did this happen?
Posted By: Nomad Jan 08, 2003 - 07:17 am | | Nah, Iz...they are just pretending. It's the invisible state of Canada. Or is it just one of our republics? (Nomad ducks form the Canadians)
Posted By: MerleZ Jan 08, 2003 - 08:13 am | | You mean Canada's not part of the US? , next thing you know, you'll be trying to tell me Mexico isn't the 51st state!
Posted By: Iznardi Jan 08, 2003 - 08:29 am | | Of, right. Forgot about the Canadians. Are they free now? I wonder if the Brits know about it. Whose are they putting on the coinage? Michael J. Fox? He's the only famous Canadian I can think of (except for Dudley Doright).
