What is Atlantis?

It is the first spin of series from stargate.

Here is some info:
INFORMATION FROM BRAD WRIGHT
SG-1 co-creator / executive producer / writer
"The idea for it [Atlantis] is very cool and I've been setting it up since Season One, when I planted a seed to give us a direction in which we could go. We've been slowing building up the possibilities [from there]."

"The spin-off will take place in a slightly altered continuation of the Stargate universe."

"The spin-off series will not be based on a military team."

"Atlantis is less military in command structure, but I can't tell you much more than that without giving too much away."

"The Goa'uld may still be around, but a new series has to have a new villain."

ATLANTIS UPDATE (25 JULY, 2003)
The original idea for the Stargate SG-1 spin-off was to have Season Seven build towards a feature film that would set up all the necessary elements required for Atlantis. MGM has confirmed that an eight season of SG-1 will go ahead in 2004, resulting in the movie becoming the Season Seven finale.

TV Guide magazine is reporting that Atlantis (dubbed the "underwater" spin-off) will not be waiting around for SG-1 to finish, with the two shows possibly airing on the Sci-Fi Channel at the same time in 2004. According to creator Brad Wright, Atlantis will take place in another galaxy. The team will be led by civilians, and headed by a woman (possibly Dr Theresa Weir - who appears in the Season Seven finale). The series will also feature new villains, including one "who makes the Goa'uld look tame by comparison".

The Sci-Fi Channel has also revealed that Atlantis "... will feature an entirely new cast of explorers and scientists who will search for clues to the origins of the Stargate."

The pilot script of the spin-off will be written by SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright and executive producer Robert C. Cooper.

PREMISE
Stargate Atlantis is the brand new spin-off television series from Brad Wright, SG-1 co-creator. Stargate Atlantis will be a whole new adventure with a new team in the Stargate universe. In this spin-off from MGM Worldwide Television, a secret base left by the Ancients (the builders of the Stargates) is found in the most unlikely of places: on Earth, buried within the ruins of the legendary civilisation Atlantis. This base is most likely the Lost City the team have been looking for throughout Season Seven of SG-1. The implications of this discovery lead the team to a distant universe, where they find a primitive human civilisation threatened by a sinister new enemy.

News: Atlantis Casting Announced

SCI FI Channel announced today that casting has been completed on the network's highly anticipated original series, Stargate Atlantis. Joe Flanigan (Profiler, Tru Calling) leads the cast and will be joined by Torri Higginson (TekWar), Rainbow Sun Francks, David Hewlett (Stargate SG-1) and Rachel Luttrell (Impostor).

Set to debut in July with a two-hour premiere, Atlantis follows the adventures of the Stargate Atlantis team, which is formed after a secret base, abandoned by the original builders of the Stargates, is found buried in the ice of Antarctica. Their discovery leads to a daring expedition to the distant Pegasus galaxy, where they encounter a primitive human civilization and a sinister new enemy that threatens human life everywhere.

Flanigan will play Maj. John Sheppard, a courageous and gifted pilot, while Higginson will portray Dr. Elizabeth Weir, head of the mission and a diplomatic relations specialist. Rounding out the cast are Francks as Lt. Aiden Ford, an enthusiastic young officer who becomes Sheppard's second-in-command, Hewlett, reprising his Stargate SG-1 recurring role as astrophysicist Dr. Rodney McKay, and Luttrell as Teyla, a beautiful young leader among the primitive alien civilization that the Atlantis team encounters. In a special guest starring role, sci-fi favorite Robert Patrick (Terminator 2, The X-Files) will appear as Col. Marshall Sumner in the two-hour Atlantis premiere event. Following its premiere, 18 additional original episodes of Atlantis will air during the show's regular Friday night 10 p.m. ET/PT slot, as a companion series to the all-new eighth season of Stargate SG-1.
