Claudia Christian in a SciFi Musical?

Science-fiction musicals traditionally haven't fared too well on Broadway—the initial run of The Rocky Horror Picture Show lasted only about a month—but that hasn't deterred young Scottish playwright Daniel O'Brien from fashioning a futuristic presentation that he hopes will one day conquer the Great White Way. While Area 51 has yet to be staged beyond a single workshop production, folks can experience the adventure via a new CD containing 15 spirited songs. The album, featuring former Babylon 5 star Claudia Christian and up-and-coming British actor Matt Rawle, offers a stimulating sonic "sneak preview" of the stirring SF tale.

Although there are short dialogue segments sprinkled throughout the recording, it's the musical elements that propel the action forward. In the opening melody, "Stranger Than Fiction," three young women recount the rumors surrounding the mysterious Area 51 military base, while the facility's lead researcher, Rick Adams (Rawle), is introduced in the effervescent "Resident Cool Guy." The first act continues with the discovery of an extraterrestrial radio signal ("Greys Are Givin' Us the Blues";), the unexpected emergence of a group of shadowy strangers ("Persons in Black";) and the entrance of a man claiming to have been abducted by aliens ("Human Lab Rat";).

In the second act, "The First Encounter" outlines the anticipation surrounding the imminent arrival of the visitors, with the ensuing instrumental, "Dance of the Possessed," harmonically presenting the space invaders' psychic subjugation of Dolores Fullborn (Christian)—Adams' personal assistant and lover—and various supporting players. The tunes progress through several more twists and turns, and when the curtain figuratively comes down following "Aftermath," the show's concluding composition, listeners will have discovered that, at least within Area 51, aliens and appearances can be not only deceiving, but also deadly.

Dynamic, but still in need of development
Filled with sly verbal and melodic allusions to such popular movie and television standards as Star Trek, Flash Gordon, The Day the Earth Stood Still and, of course, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Area 51 is a bright and breezy romp that combines classic genre story elements with modern-day alien mythology and a lively rock 'n' roll attitude. The compositions have a few rough edges—the play is admittedly still a work in progress—and the characters and plot could both benefit from additional development, but overall the recording presents a tantalizing taste of the tale's inherent energy and excitement.

The strongest composition is undoubtedly "Then We Met Like This," an elegant love song impressively performed by Christian and Rawle. Their voices soar over gorgeous strings and keyboards as they declare their true feelings for one another. The sentiments expressed in this show-stopping tune, which closes the first act, add significant power to ensuing cuts like "You Can Run" and "•••••• If You Do," which raucously pit Adams against the possessed Fullborn.

Nevertheless, taken as a whole, the play lacks focus and polish. "Surfin' the Cyber-Sexual Highway," a number that delves into important identity issues, is marred by overly lascivious lyrics and an unnecessarily exaggerated presentation, while some of the key supporting players lack crucial individuality; they're billed simply as Person in Black, Cammo Dude Captain and Cammo Dudette. The production also ends on a decidedly pessimistic note, leaving listeners crestfallen rather than contemplative. Yet the basic narrative remains intriguing, and the performances are, for the most part, adequate (Rawle's contributions are particularly accomplished). Area 51 serves as an admirable preview of an SF musical that, with a tad more fine tuning, could readily result in a rewarding and worthwhile night at the theater.

Though the disc—which also features a CD-ROM component showcasing a short behind-the-scenes featurette—is supposedly available online exclusively through the British publication UFO Magazine, it may be easier (and potentially cheaper) for American citizens to order it from the New York-based Footlight Records, where the recording is for sale, too. — Jeff

In a conversation via ICQ with a Babylon-5 fan friend of mine whom I've never met in RL because she lives in Auckland, NZ she told me she met Jason Carter (Ranger Marcus Cole) at a sci-fi con. there last weekend.
It seems he has a new TV movie in the can which from the look of it's status at the IMDb, the production company must be shopping around looking for a distribution deal or already has one with the network or cable station still to be named.
This Film has a web site & a fan site up already.
It's a new approach to Vampire movies.

Check out the web site for: Demon Under Glass
There are a couple of good shots of Jason up as well.
I hope this does better than Claudia Christian & Pat Tallman's last project; Never Die Twice (2000), which has yet to be released. I read an interview where Claudia stated; "And I hope it never will be".

I've not seen much news concerning B-5 actors of late, well Claudia Christian was in a Steven Sagal movie called Half Past Dead [2002] that was in theaters for like 2 weeks then straight to video.

As a big fan of the Westerns genre I was looking at Monte Walsh and saw that Marshall Teague [Nelson Drake, Ta'Lon] is in it. It's on tonight up against Farscape but not to worry 'cause it will be on again 7 times over the next week.
The entire supporting cast looks pretty decent.

Quote:

"Two years after Louis L'Amour's “Crossfire Trail,” Tom Selleck reunites with director Simon Wincer (Lonesome Dove) for this 2003 cable Western.

Selleck plays Monte Walsh, an aging cowboy in 1892 Wyoming. As industry expands throughout the country and big business gobbles up the remaining open land, it's clear that the Old West is dying. Walsh's job is becoming obsolete and everything around him is changing. He struggles to maintain his identity, even as his girlfriend (Isabella Rossellini) tries to get the die-hard cowboy to settle down, and his best pal (Keith Carradine) gives up life on the range altogether. Selleck also served as executive producer.

Cast: Tom Selleck, Isabella Rossellini, Keith Carradine, George Eads, Robert Carradine, Barry Corbin, James Gammon, Rex Linn, John Michael Higgins, William Sanderson, Wallace Shawn, Marshall Teague, William Devane, Lori Hallier, Zack Ward
Rating: TV-14
Content: Violence
Category: Movie, Western
Director: Simon Wincer
Release Year: 2003"

It's a shame regarding Babylon 5. The series was, in my view, without question the best sci-fi series to date.
I hope they are going to do another series I really do, and I am probably not alone.
The writing on Babylon 5 was some of the best script work I hacve ever had the pleasure of watching, and the storylines and special effects were awsome, not to mention ground braking with regards to special effects

Saw this Bill Mumy news at the SF Wire.

"Producers of UPN's The Twilight Zone told SCI FI Wire that the show next week will begin shooting a sequel to the classic 1959 episode "It's a Good Life," in which a 6-year-old Billy Mumy sent people to the cornfield—with a now-middle-aged Mumy reprising the role of Anthony Fremont and Cloris Leachman again playing his mother. In another twist, Mumy's real-life daughter, Liliana, will play Fremont's daughter, who also has paranormal abilities, in the new episode, called "It's Still a Good Life," the producers said.

"We just signed Cloris Leachman [to reprise the role] as his mother," executive producer Ira Steven Behr said in an interview. "We have Bill playing Anthony Fremont, [the] same character. He's going to be wishing people into the cornfields. And we meet his daughter in real life, Liliana Mumy, who's an actress who was in The Santa Clause 2. She's going to be playing his daughter on the show, who is also going to have those Fremont powers. So that's going to be a really exciting show, and I know the network is really excited about it. The episode is slated to air in February."

That was one creepy episode I saw back when I was a kid. Bill's "little monster" had all the adult characters scared half out of their wits. Hope this one is scary too.

You betcha, Zim. That was a truly scary episode. I've never forgotten. The intro was that there was a "monster" in the town, and then the camera zoomed in on angelic little Billy Mumy swinging on a farm gate. And he was a little monster, too. Remember how he made the TV work?

Is that the guy who played Dr. Stephen Franklin who's in the "Miller Life" women mud wrestling commercial (sitting at the bar?) Only saw a quick glimpse and it looked like him.

Just a heads up.

Thanks for the reminder Zim, been waiting for that. Also, I believe Enid Raye Adams (A female Minbari from Legend of the Rangers) is gonna be in the second story, isn't she?

This is the only time I've been interested in watching this new Twilight Zone. Has anyone else been watching it? Is it fairly decent usually?

I've seen a few episodes. Some arw quite good. Unfotunately, it interferes with The West Wing, which Karina watches and I guess I get hooked into also.

Well I watched it and quite enjoyed it. A bit different than I expected, but alot was what I expected in it. Kinda expected the daughter would be a loose cannon and that the father would be the tame one. Turns out in the end that's the way it played out.

The 2nd story was quite good as well, nice little twist there at the end too. I think if Hollywood wants to send a powerful message about the Mid East Crisis and Terrorism, and being against the Government's solutions and aggressiveness, that stories like this one, well written and well acted are going to get their point across much better than the campaign Jeannine Garafolo, Martin Sheen, Susan Sarandon, etc are currently on. Hollywood actors are much better and convincing, IMHO, opposing war within their own medium.

The original show with Billy Mummy was on Scifi last night also. Coincidence? I think not.

Has anyone seen the AT&T Wireless commercial about the corded phone being obsolete? It's set up like Antiques Road Show. Anyway, I think the "expert appraiser" was the interrogator the Vorlons sent to question Sheridan and Delenn. Anyone know?

Yeah MerleZ, that was Wayne Alexander [Sabastian, Lorien, Drahk, Drazi]. I saw that one during the Super Bowl.

About that T-Zone episode...it was good, real good, best one yet, Bill was good, why him and Liliana were both good, REAL good in fact. Who needs those others who didn't think they were good anyways?
We're better off with just good people, that's right just fine good people. People that Bill & Liliana like...works for me
