Posted By: ZimNova Jan 20, 2001 - 11:45 pm | | For those of you whom remember me from my posting days at the SFV [RIP], I always used to sign my musings *Surf Bum*. Yesterday at Maverick's near Half Moon Bay, Ca. (where I run my big-rig down the coastside) the surf was UP! Like 35'+. Not for the faint of heart and requiring balls of steel, a wetsuit & a 10-12' board it was hella rippin'. To see for yourself, check out this link: Maverick's Cowabunga Baby! LGaM Pt.3 (Part one, to much for one post) This episode was kinda the same thrill. Hammer down, damn the tordepo's, let 'er rip. Was that almost a tear in Aeryn's eye upon the news that John booked to the depository? Our first 'misunderstanding' over payment starts me thinking, "this ones gonna rock", as all the players are very well cast as the 'Merc Force' and as they draw down on each other another thought, "what a team!" But wait there's more...Talyn, which means Crais, triple damn better still. John's getting his back as well as his head worked on by Scorpy while Natira checks out his prostate, ouch! (Zim crosses legs uncomfortably) Crais made a vary good point to Aeryn about the use of Talyn. He is correct that he has been 'lectured' about the use of Talyn in past episodes and also correct that the changing state of affairs will require Talyn to do violence again. This brings up a bigger moral issue in the series. It's easy to set back and condemn violence from a distance until one needs that 'help'. Aeryn learns that lesson here and even more is willing to give herself to Crais should that be the 'price' to secure Talyn's aid to save Crichton. Ah, another 'plan', Stark's good at plans. Sorry but I'm gonna skip the entire Ka'D'argo/Jothee story line as it did nothing for me. However the story re: Starks plan is worse than bad, it's 'frelled'. That from Ka D'argo whom suggests 'Plan B'. Onto the assult of the depository. Stayed tuned.
Zim--you're one step ahead of me yet again! Frell...I just need to be quicker around here I guess Natira was fun nasty (and I don't mean the prostate exam!) in this one. Her unexpected, and very creepy, obsession with eyeballs was an interesting twist. Scorpy's interrogation, if you can call it that, was quite tame by comparison to Natira's blatant blood lust. Sure hope she ain't gone for good! The moral lesson from Crais was interesting. They guy has no morals, but he got to throw Aeryn's own words at her. Still, I think we all realize that no matter how distasteful, sometimes might makes right when you aren't given other choices. I thought it was interesting that, basically, Talyn decided to help and didn't give Crais any choice in the matter. Ah, the bond of mother and child! I agree with the Jothee opinion...it was sort of pointless. There is already so much going on that this sideline seemed forced. I'll hope for more in depth father-son stories down the road, but for now they should just leave it. The heart of the story, and where Zim left off, is that assault. Action, action, and more action! Now THIS is the kind of resistance I expected when they first raided the joint! I must admit that I was a little confused about how Stark's plan was supposed to work. They didn't do a very good job of explaining it, and it was done quite early in the ep. Later, D'Argo says "we're just going to storm the place"...OK, they do that. Yet Zhaan and her little group seemed to be following Stark's plan all along. So what exactly changed? I think the writers overextended a bit on this ep and ended up cramming too many unimportant side bits in (which is why the Jothee sideline didn't work IMHO). The K.I.S.S. principal would have been a good idea...there was so much going on they could have streamlined some of that out and not lost a thing. The pirate betrayal worked great though...I never saw it coming! When it did, Scorpy picking up on it suddenly blinked on a light bulb. A clever twist, and we got to see Chiana get mean and dirty (you DID notice where she shot him, right?) I thought the moral at the end of the ep was played well. Rygel's being his selfish, greedy self, but I liked the regret from the rest of the crew (expect John, who was too busy freaking out as the chip zaps his brain). The look on Zhaan's face when the Tavlek (sorry, forgot his name) walks out saying "thanks for teaching me how to kill again" was priceless and said it all. Will D'Argo do what John asks a the close? Bah...of course not! Stupid sort of cliffhanger really. The REAL question is, what will our intrepid crew do now that they have money?
Posted By: ZimNova Jan 21, 2001 - 10:45 pm | | Now Natira is a real piece of work, sugar & spice and everything nice! Well execpt for her thing for eyes that is. Poor Rorf is in for some tough times. btw, we know that Scorpius was taken in and raised by Natira, he being a Sebacean/Scarran bastard halfbreed but me wonders if his mean streak comes from having watched Natira 'play' while he was still an impressionable young lad? Nice CGI shot of the Sunrise behind the shadow depository buildings too. I like 'Plan B'. Storm the place, "that's what we do best", kill anything the moves as there will be no friendlys to worry about in the crossfire. This is one hell of a firefight, shot in such a way as to convey the confusion that reigns during the fog of war. Tony Tilse again does a fine job directing as he keeps the camera moving aroung the action. The editing was also first rate, cutting between explosions, flying and falling bodies, flashes of light and our heros in combat....damn fine work by everyone involved. Turak has to give himself up for the cause for he knows he is past his prime and like any honorable Ronin will fall on his sword to help his comrades at this his last battle. Had to LOL at Aeryn's *classic* question, "Do you think there's anyone behind this door". Just like during ANY car chase scene, (Hollywood inside joke), they will wipe out a *vegetable stand*, there is ALWAYS somebody behind that door, all of them in fact in this case! And the battle picks up in intensity after the lights go out. Once again the show rocks. This battle in NV mode rivals anything we've seen from the Hanson Co. to date. Vary violent. Speaking of violence, the *muppets* image has been laid to rest with Rygel and his Durka trophy! He found his revenge and is a fine pilot too. Bekhesh a traitor? Sure, sold out to the highest bidder, Scorpius in this case. Chiana kicks his ass though and frys his, ah, private parts....LOL Our heros now enjoy some wealth, but the fate of John remains in doubt. Stay tuned.
Posted By: Iznardi Jan 22, 2001 - 05:47 am | | okay, here i am, a late-comer as usual-- now that you've seen the episode, you might want to go to the BBC farscape page and see their review. they analyse a lot of the lines, including the "Do you think there's anyone behind this door" line, and trace them back to their movie origins. i loved this episode but agree with Master that it went over the top at some points. scorpius walking very slowly towards crichton in the middle of a fire-fight, for example. i don't know why aeryn's night-vision goggles had to misfunction, either. seemed like trying to cram too much into one scene. my favorite parts: Durka makes a wonderful scepter. I love it. The sheyang's solution to destroying the generator was terrific. BBC criticized it, but to me it made sense. This critter had been left for dead by his companions, he was weak and old, and he knew he had no future with his own people. Sheyang's are opportunists but they also have a sense of honor and a desire to go down fighting. I think the got what he was after. This was a terrific episode about Crais. I almost liked him and on the whole he seems more restrained in the use of power than anyone else we've met on the show. Hmmmmm, did he have his way with Aeryn, or was that just a teaser? I already know how the next episode ends (mum's the word); if the end-of-episode cliff-hanger in this ep seems weak, wait until next Friday! I hope SciFi isn't going to make us wait 4 months to find out what happens. things I didn't like: Scorpius was disappointing here for me. He seems to have the Joker/Riddler Sympton; i.e., spend 45 minutes telling your opponent what your going do to him, and when your going to do it, blah blah blah, and then, ooops, you waited too long, sucker, tough crackers, he got away. I would have preferred to see him extract the wormhole information, leaving Crichton alive. Kind of hard to believe the only hold-up was waiting on his Marauder. Bad planning, Scorpy. And where's Natira? Died? Fried? Satis-fied?
Okay, my memory of the eps is fading fast. I'll have to go find my tapes and watch them again I guess. I must have missed some of the ep too, as I don't remember Durka. Definitely gonna have to go find those tapes.....
Posted By: Iznardi Jan 23, 2001 - 05:53 am | | ian-- for Durka, think large decaptated head on a stick. he didn't have a lot of lines. find of like Mr. Morden in his last scene on Babylon 5. Durka was a pre-Scorpy Peace-Keeper Creep. He was the Jailer and Torturer of everyone's beloved Hynerian slugworm, Rygel the Whatever. Durka was seized by the Nebari when they destroyed his Marauder and was "reprogrammed" to be non-agressive. An accidental encounter with Moya and Rygel triggered his memories and broke the programming. Of course, he immediately tried to take over the ship. Crichton blasted him out into space in a crippled transport vessel and everyone figured he would either die in space or be recaptured by the Nebari. However, he hasn't figured in the plot for a long time, and I guess the writer's decided it was time to get rid of him for good and write him out of the script. Unless someone reactivates his head . . . In which case, he might be able to get a part on LEXX.
Come to think of it, I guess the only reason Durka was in this arc was to off him. Sort of odd I suppose, but maybe it was just part of the whole "cavalcade of past characters"? It was fun to see Rygel's vicious side though!
Posted By: Crowe Jan 25, 2001 - 07:04 pm | | Last ep: I think the Durka element was thrown in to close that sub plot. They have quite a few sub plots lingering and it was time to clean house to make way for some news plots to come about. Continuity can get quite messy if you let plots linger. The show needed closure on these little buggers. Same goes with Jothee, he's been looming in the shadows too long. The air needs to be cleared and we move on. Also, It's time to straighten out John, the chip thread needs closing. I think the Jothee thing, as rushed as it was in the final four here, were merely a vehicle to bring everyone to the same place at the same time. It had to be big, because they've made a big deal about getting him back for so long, but like everyone has stated, it was under played. The Jothee story took a back seat in the end. A question, what happend to Stark's people? Did Scorpius whack em? Did Natira? Or did they ever exist in the first place? Does anyone besides me just not trust stark. Someone frilling end him please I'm worried about this last ep. Do we loose a crew member? Please say no. (Unless is Stark or Jothee, maybe they'll kill each other) lol. Crais has become quite a good part of the show. I've enjoyed his evolution as a character. Very well done. And I love that the ships are also characters in the show, very original IMHO. At any rate, I'm looking forward to tomorrow's ep. --- Crowe
As I recall, Scorpy said "do what you want with them...I only want Jothee", and I guess Natira killed them to get her jollys. Stupid move no matter who did it. Duh...they were slaves! You'd think Natira would have bundled them up and sold them off for a quick and easy buck. I think you're right about Durka.
Posted By: Crowe Jan 29, 2001 - 10:51 am | | I was thinking about the slaves again, and back to my loathing of Stark. I don't know if there were ever any of Stark's people to begin with. Though Stark wasn't meant to be a recurring role, I think he's going to be the source of more trouble in future ep's. He's got a nack for getting them into trouble, and who knows what his motivations are. He's lied about plenty of other things, why not the slaves? He had other motives. The real question is where they good or bad?
