What show is that ... Phoenix or something like that?

A time traveler or alien who helps people (unassuming hero) is trying to find all the pieces to get home. He lines up triangles with the stars, etc.

I'm discribing this all wrong. And I wish i could remember more.

Yes, it was called The Phoenix and it starred Judson Scott. You might remember him as Khan's right hand man in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. Theres a few websites out there about it if you want to reminisce....
