Sliders

PLEASE BOOKMARK THE NEW FORUMS
My favourite tv series is Sliders. But I think it is a pity that nearly all the original characters have been killed off or lost. I liked Wade much more than Maggie - Quinn used to too. Sliders isn't what it was, but I still enjoy watching it on a Friday night.

I know that they only started having repeats last week (in Australia) but this week is a repeat to. One good thing is that you get to see all the old characters like Wade and The Professor. I agree with you Silverowl that having Maggie and Colin is a bit suck but I think that they might(maybe)find Wade on that Breeding camp.Oh well maybe when the repeats stop i will like it a bit more
Sci-fi Channel isn't showing any repeats of the old series in the US. The new series season did seem really short though, and they are already well into repeats. Anyone know what the scuttlebut on Wade's exit is? Was she canned, or did she want out?
Posted By: Lisseut Jan 19, 1999 - 07:21 pm | | Sliders started off well, but has gotten progressively worse. I don't mind the new characters so much, although the original Maggie was much better. The writers seem to have forgotten that she was military trained and have turned her into a bimbo. I have to say that I like Colin (he's much better looking than his brother!) although his character is not always consistent. Also the episode which introduced him was too gimmicky. They either needed to explain events better, or think up a better way of bringing him in. I would like to see Wade be rescued, but not necessarily stay in the show. She and Remy could be dropped off at home which would pave the way for another character to be picked up.
The latest (finally new) episodes have been very uneven. I think part of the degradation is simply because the Sci-Fi Channel doesn't have the bucks to put into it. I definitely agree about Maggie...I thought she was there to kick butt and keep the guys in place. She's been kinda dull, and I haven't seen her do anything that seems very military lately. I have no opinion on Colin's looks (like duh), but I have to say that I'm not particularly impressed with his acting. He seems sort of plastic to me.

The only correlation between two episodes is a computer animated blue-black hole, that pops up every episodes end, and hoovers around in the air, inviting our friends, the sliders, to jump (while they could aswell walk) through, and in that way, end the episode. I believe the series one and only goal is to glorify our worlds capitalism , by comparing it with other systems and other worlds, which are inherently described as far worse then ours. In this way, the writers try to induce a sympathy for our safe world (obviously the best of all worlds), so that its economic and social systems ar not doubted or questioned.

Well, yes and no. Originally, it was far more chaotic. Just a bunch of lost travellers trying to get home. The current series has more of a general theme, but it still hinges on the unpredicability of "what will the next world be like". I don't think it glories capitalism at all. Sliders is basically a "What If..." story. Of course, the only frame of reference is what we know today. The original series would take more time to show better worlds (I will always remember oil gushing from the ground in San Francisco...and that was all of 2 minutes worth of airtime). Let's face it, no one would watch at all if there wasn't fresh conflict each week! As a side note, Sci-fi channel reports Sliders as its highest rated "non-movie" program...a less than 2% market share. I wonder if cable channels think that's good?
Posted By: Snotolf Apr 27, 1999 - 04:19 am | | I agree. I was wrong on all accounts. But then, still, there's something else bothering me... If "advanced" sliding technology as demonstrated in sliders can fit in a pocket-sized bread-tin (very mutch contradicting with other advanced technologies that mostly fill entire labs in order to work.), and if it can be elaboratly designed by a professor dumb enough to test his devices personally without overthinking the consequences, and if it is used on a large scale by ape-like and obviously not so bright creatures known as the Cromaggs (Cromag- Cromagnon...is there a relationship ???), THEN WHAT THE HELL IS SO ADVANCED ABOUT IT??
Yep--Cromaggs is definitely a take on Cromagnon. I think that's where the browridge comes in. I missed the episode where they first showed up...I'm guessing they didn't die out on some parallel world and became the dominant species. I guess the technology is "advanced" just because we can't do it. People thought the telephone was pretty amazing too...now we take it for granted. Computers once filled rooms...now you can carry one in your pocket that has 1000% the power. It's all a matter of perspective. Personally, I don't really buy into the idea of parallel universes. It makes a decent plot device for a TV show though! Very much like using time travel, except you never quite know what you're going to get.
I realize that this string is dedicated to Sliders, but I read that people were talking about the SF channel's own shows and I was wondering what people thought about the other new shows. I am talking about Poltergeist The Legacy, First Wave, and Farscape. I personally like all of them. I do wish that the SF channel would resurrect the show Space Above and Beyond. I kinda like the space shoot em up shows.
If you (or anyone) would like to start a discussion about one of these series, it would be better if it was done as a new TV conversation--folks won't look for it in this one! Still, I like First Wave (intelligent, I always like a good consipiracy), and Farscape (fun and visually interesting, plots could be beefed up a little). PTL is getting a little "long in the tooth"--its been on the air for a long time now and seems to be a lot more hit and miss these days.
I know it's been a while since anyone posted here...and I know the show has been canned...long a go but I'm new to the internet and this forum... some points to clear up. If you didn't which the first episode....it was the student that made the sliding machine...what was his name...Quinn...Quinn was so excited when he found out that his machine worked, he was not thinking straight... The pocket-sized bread-tin thing was actual like a remote control (called a timer) it sent a signal to the machine(somehow?),it did not create the wormholes, the machine was in Quinn's basement, and took up part of the basement...much bigger than the remote thing... I like the show it was great, but I don't thing they explored the concept enough...they could have had a lot more of different alien races... Perhaps they should have set the show more in the future when we were traveling around in space ships, just a thought..
I miss the professer and what ever happend to there being a enimmy that could also slide. But if there is one thing that I do like is that they alwayse find a way to get a new carricteres in the storie and they have all there own stories to tell.

Posted By: Margali Jul 16, 2003 - 11:42 am | | First Wave and Farscape were Scifi but SAAB was on FOX and then cancelled before SF picked up the repeats. PTL was on Showtime for season 1-3 before coming to SF for the 4th and final season. David Kemper producer of Farscape once said in an article that he worked on PTL and he believed they didn't do anything with the show's potential. I agree, an ancient society fighting all the boogey men is interesting. As for Sliders. Seasons 1-2 were ok but not great. Seasons 3-4 were Kromagg invasion which i can sum up in one word *YAWN* They bring in the new Quinn and Diane in season 5 and it improved. Too bad it was the same time they moved to SF whose known for trashing good series in favor of soft core porn like LEXX. The new Quinn brought an edge to Quinn and made him more interesting. To bad they focused on the breats with legs aka Maggie instead of writing for all 4 characthers.
Posted By: Magus Sep 25, 2004 - 03:32 pm | | It's an awsome show, especially the first two seasons which are now on DVD. I did hate, however, the fact that the only person left at the end of the show was Rembrant, the only one who came involuntarily. They just kind of gutted the original cast. That's my only real gripe. Otherwise it was an awsome show. The first episode was the best one of them, in my opinion.
