Posted By: Iznardi Jun 15, 2001 - 07:54 am | | Okay, here's a challenge. I've missed the last three Farscape episodes. I tried reading the Journey Logs and they just made my head hurt. I gather that the crew has changed the past, altered the present, split up, found a new leviathan that houses the cannibal of the month, who has eatern dargo and chiana, and that tayln has been beaten to a pulp. In 100 words or less, can anyone sum up what the frell has been going on? iz
Posted By: Crowe Jun 15, 2001 - 08:22 am | | Okay, when we start this new EP tonight, there are 2 John's! The last ep ended with John playing paper rock cissors with ... well, himself. Everyone else is back on board (Obvsiouly minus Zhaan) .. So this could be twisted
Oh Iz...what are we going to do with you? Different Destinations was self-contained (so you're not losing any real story arc there), but was quite entertaining and had some winner performances. Our heroes visit a world where there is a memorial to a battle between PK forces protecting a group of nuns, and the peace the PK's sacifice brought to the war torn planet. The monument includes a viewer that lets you see the events of that final battle. Stark tries it, freaks out, creates a hole in time, and they get sucked through (stupid Stark!). While in the past, they inadvertently change events, and Chiana and Rygel watch in horror from Moya in the present as the planet changes before their eyes, eventually dying completly (i.e. because of them, peace never came, the war never ended, and the world eventually destroyed itself). Stark can also sense the changes, so, ever vigilent, John and company push things back to their previous conclusion (key being the death of a PK soldier) and scurry back to the present. Unfortunately, things are not entirely the same. The viewer glasses reveal the invading horde screaming that the nuns are hiding Crichton. The nuns, who previously lived, are massacred. Good ep. Eat me: John, Jool, Chiana, and D'Argo are in a shuttle pod that gets damanged. They set course for a Leviathan, assuming its Moya. When they get closer, they realize its another ship that still has it's PK control collar (i.e. another prison ship). They have no choice but to land. Inside, they find a house of horror. The ship is decaying; the pilot is half mad, and crazy mutant looking PK's are eating his arms and the ship for food. They eventually meeet the cause of it all, Kaarvok. He was an insane criminal who was the ships only prison (being too dangerous to have anyone imprisoned with him). He escaped, and had been feeding on the PK's by cloning them, eating one of the clones, cloning again, etc. The cloning is an instant thing (he called it being twinned), and each cloning takes a little bit of the subjects mind with it. Hence, the reason the PK's that were left were now insane (too many clonings). Just before escape, John gets hit with Kaarvoks device, and we end up with two Johns. This is where we pick up tonight. IN THE MEANTIME...Aeryn, Rygel, and Stark are still on Moya. Moya suddenly starbursts when she gets a distress call from Talyn. They find Talyn a drift, badly damaged by some obviously powerful force. We don't get any more on this sideline, so it is an obvious set up for a future ep. OK, I did my best to get you up to speed. Next time, we put you in rack on bread and water...
Interesting ep... We finally learn Crais' secret: Aeryn's mom is chasing Talyn. Also, that Aeryn was a "love child", and not an accident or PK ordered birth. Should provide some interesting twists to the story arc, wouldn't you say? I like that better than Crais being her brother, or any of the other ideas we floated around! Using the two Johns to get by the "truth lobster" was cool, but I have to admit the Crazy Crichton thing is getting old. It worked when Scorpy was buzzing around his head, but now its like he's a one-trick actor. Easing off the loony speak is in order here. Splitting them up, one going off on Talyn, one staying on Moya was odd. The previews for next week (an ep written by Browder) made it look like the whole group will be together, so its not clear on what the purpose of a short separation may be. Jool--what do you know, she has a skill after all! Ship's medic seems to work for her. She can be bitchy and tangle with the group on occasion (I still love her and Chi's back and forth), but it should keep her out of the "away missions" and off on the sidelines. A little Jool goes a long way, so that could work out. Clearly there is a move to replace Zhaan's role by letting Jool fill the doctor part, and Stark fill the spiritual role. Stark still bugs me, but his more limited role in this ep helped. Not wearing those awful rags helps too. And I have to admit, I got a good laugh with his "your side/my side" exchange with Rygel. So the question I still have is, what the heck was that creature? And was the princess chick ever real, or was it a set up from the start? Little lost on that part.
Posted By: Azziz Jun 16, 2001 - 02:14 pm | | Master, I liked the your side/my side exchange with Rygel too. One of Stark's better moments. Actually I kind of like Stark's interactions with Buckwheat. They play off each other nicely. And Stark is a loose enough cannon that Rygel will back off a little quicker than he does with the other members I think. That creature. I have to watch the ep again, but we see that creature's hands earlier in the ep. So I am not sure if the sister/princess is replaced during the ep or is there from the start. Again, have to rewatch the ep and see the context in which we first see signs of that creature. The two Johns angle on fooling lobster thing was a interesting twist. A bit risky still, since in some ways John *was* lying. Since both John's are him, it could be argued that *he* did make the meeting with the Princess. So he would have to have clearly divided that in his head to fool Lobster thing. Aeryn's Mom angle. This should be a interesting plot twist and give Claudia something to work with character wise and that can be nothing but good. And much better angle than many of the things we came up with. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out and how Aeryn works thru it. Jool/Stark = Zhaan - Definately an interesting way to arrange it. Still interested to see how they are going to resolve the two John issue. On EFC they did a two Liam story and one Liam sacrificed himself to save Renee and Da'an. But in that case it was the *clone* that died. In this case we have two equal and complete John's. Very interesting.
Posted By: Bmat Jun 16, 2001 - 06:12 pm | | Yes it is most intriguing about how the two John issue will be handled. You don't suppose one will go back to Urp and the other stay with the crew do you? I am not a Stark fan by any means, but the my side /your side line was the best in the episode! I agree with the Master that John's histrionics are way past old. I've been tired of the overacting for some time. I assume the actor is following direction. It seemed as if the Princess were killed after the explosion in the bar. We saw the alien creature cause the explosion, then the Princess remarks to someone/thing about finishing it. I think she was killed then.
Posted By: ZimNova Jun 16, 2001 - 09:54 pm | | Iz, The Master wrote a great synopsis of the ep.'s you missed but he left out from *Eat Me* the best and most gruesome bit! After Kaarvor would *twin* someone he would use this 1 meter long needle on his arm to kill the twin by pressing it into the skull (from the top with Ka D'argo and under the chin with Chiana) and suck out their brains. As he said of Chi's twin, "vary tasty". *Thanks For Sharing* Pt. 1 This was a first rate ep. and well worth the wait. The thing is, even though they use different writers, they (producers) still carry on the story arc without a hitch. Well done. Right off the bat I liked planet Kanvia for the same reason I liked Skykar in *Thank God it's Friday Again* from S-1. On Skykar they raved all night, on Kanvia they share a more *goth* leather and booze scene. Both are kinda new wave, check out the tattoo on the running chick. The *rep.* the crew has as planet and baby killers follows them yet again. It must be front page news in half the sector. Ka'Dargo gets the laugh meter running with, "every frelling planet", as he has to fend off, again, unwanter suitors for sexy Chi. Alas, the bargining fails. Kicked the wrong ass this time. "Oh yotz, not the security director". A great scene in this arc ep. was Crais not knowing Aeryn was still alive. Everyone (character) still thinks Crais killed Scorpius so we have a few new surprises left in the arc for the crew re: Scorpius, known to we viewers to have survived the attack by Talyn. We have some *politics* later, and to quote Ka D'argo again, "every frelling planet". No dren, same thing we saw in the *LatP* trilogy. Planetary goverments are so caught up in internal politics that they just use our hero's to futher their own political agendas. We have the players, Rinic Pralanoth, Tolven, Serova, any of the above as those whom want to futher their careers, at any cost? Stay tuned. ZimNova
Posted By: ZimNova Jun 17, 2001 - 03:27 pm | | Thanks for Sharing Pt. 2 Lots of spoilers. You know, this is a good story with TfS, full of twists in the plot and would make a great starter ep. for new viewers as every character plays a part in it. It should also be up for an award for the superb costumes and make up effects. We see Rygel as a skilled negotiator but also one willing to abandon his shipmates without a second thought. That's Rygel. I agree Master that the producers have found a use for Jool's character outside of a foil for Chi. The scene with Aeryn viewing her past was vary touching. Cute kid eh! Yes just how will they play out the revelation that the retrieval squad is being commanded by her mum, Xhalax Sun? Crais makes a valid point that Xhalax is a typical PK, a ruthless assassin as they once were yet hopes Aeryn can reason with her. Aeryn however better understands the reasoning behind the PK command decision to assign her mother the task of recovering Talyn in the hope it will divide her loyalty. It may well work for outside of her tough talk could she really kill her own mum? Will she hesitate but for a moment causing a fatal mistake? I hope Aeryn does not have to choose as suggested between killing her mum or losing Talyn in a confrontation but this is the *Season of Death* after all. That was definitely some creatures hand that started the duplex explosive on it's journey. Wierd stuff...cool. Rinic Serova asks,"come to finish the task, my brother?" to an unseen figure but all we hear is some kind of hiss??? Later on Serove 'morphs into a creature herself which looks like a kind of Scarran, (could this be a mercenary species of the Scarran's or a different creature all-together?) So there are either two of whatever creature on Kanvia or Serove was talking to what?, or by "my brother" she meant Tolven was a creature too? One thing is clear. It is part of the retrieval team led by Xhalax. The use of both John's was I thought vary creative. First when they, even though on different ships know what the other will do during the bombing from the surface. Second for the blood transfussion. Thind to fool the Stannat (lobster thing) keeping the deal alive after the attack in the bar and protecting Serova for a reason I've yet to understand. Azziz, each Crichton is a seperate being so the second John to visit the planet was not lying as the other John was the one in the bar with Serova. Forth (as I guessed right), to send one John off with Crais, Aeryn, Stark and Rygel aboard Talyn, while the other John remains aboard Moya with Ka D'argo, Chiana and Jool. Anyone else think the John aboard Talyn will not survive? It doesn't look like we'll be getting any answers next week as the episode written by Ben appears it will be a *stand alone* and not part of the arc. Great one-liners: "John Crichton, Wizzard of Oz". "Whose your daddy?" Ka D'argo, "I'm your daddy", LOL ZimNova
Keep the good review coming guys.... I may get to see the start of Season 3 sometime this year!
Posted By: Iznardi Jun 18, 2001 - 05:35 am | | Thanks for Sharing First, thanks to the Master for bringing me up to speed. I picked up on the two John thing pretty quick, but was never sure what he, D'argo, and Chiana were doing on the other Leviathan. This was another quantum leap episode. Seems to me that the retrieval squad always intended to take over the planet. Once Talyn and Moya escape, the fleet makes no move to follow--they go straight into orbit. Clearly, Xhalax Sun has to make contact with her agent on the planet--the large red Scarran-like creature. However, I think from the very beginning they intended to destroy the royal house there and take over. The Scarran--if that's what it was--was responsible for the bombing in the bar, and since the Princess was alive after the explosion, I assume this Scarran somehow disposed of her and morphed into her shape. The original intent, I think, was to kill the ruler and place the son in charge as a PK puppet. That was probably the "betrayal" the prince was contemplating. There was a close parallel here with the intrigue in "Look at the Princess," so maybe we are seeing a standard Peace Keeper method of taking over planets by playing divide and conquer in the ruling houses. The obvious resolution of the two Crichton's is to have one die to save the group. I kind of hope they don't do this--too Star Trek. This coming week it looks like Talyn and Moya reunite. One glitch--Talyn didn't have to starburst to escape. He could have "tucked in" close to Moya and gotten away when she starburst. Seems like the more obvious thing to do.
Posted By: Iznardi Jun 18, 2001 - 08:13 am | | Great lines: I think that this one would qualify: Cross my heart Beat me dead Stick a lobster on my head
"...kill the ruler and place the son in charge as a PK puppet" Good one...I hadn't thought of that. I was thinking more internal power struggle, but you're right about the parallel. Maybe this planet will come back into the picture in future eps and we can see if you're right. I guess the creature's hands just escaped me. That the princess was replaced then makes sense. She said "my brother", but he passed the lobster test when questioned about it. So, the creature must have been pretending to be him during the attack, then killed her and took her place. It all falls into place...thanks guys!
The obvious resolution of the two Crichton's is to have one die to save the group. I kind of hope they don't do this--too Star Trek. This coming week it looks like Talyn and Moya reunite.
Could be. Or he could become a permanent part of Crais' crew on Talyn, which would be fun. ST didn't resolve the two Rikers by killing one though...the second used their middle name (Thomas) and went off to live his own life. Easy to do in a vast Federation, but Crichton doesn't have many easy options. We already had a "self sacrifice" multiple Chrichton ep (the one where the alien...thing...split him into past/present/future selves). I'd certainly like to see a different resolution here.
Posted By: Azziz Jun 22, 2001 - 04:10 pm | | A different angle is John2 dies because Aeryn hesitates when confronted with killing mommy dearest. She kills John, Aeryn kills her. *Still has the ewe setup feel to it tho*
