Since people do not read The News Wire on this site any more I thought I would let people know that Michael Shanks who plays Daniel Jackson (the archaeologist) is leaving the show at the end of season 5. (No reason has begiven) Full details in the news wire. The question that comes to my mind is will anyone else leave the show? As with all shows people come and go, Actors what to do other shows or movies, spent more time with their families etc. The answer is probably yes. On better news a sixth season will be produced. If you have any news about the show you can post it here. P.S. Maybe the master should make the news wire standout more (this is just a suggest).
News from www.scifi.com (small spoiler) Tapping Talks New SG-1 Amanda Tapping, who plays Maj. Samantha Carter on Stargate SG-1, told SCI FI Wire that she's eager to begin shooting the show's sixth season when production starts up next month. The show will move to The SCI FI Channel, beginning in June, from its current home on Showtime. "I have no idea what's going to happen in season six," Tapping said in a telephone interview from her home in Vancouver, B.C. "It's always frustrating." One thing is certain: series regular Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) will leave the show at the end of season five. "I kind of saw it coming," Tapping said. "But nonetheless, when it happened--when it actually came down to it--it was very sad. ... It's going to be very strange. I mean, the dynamic is so solidly in place, and now it's changing. I know that for Michael and Christopher [Judge (Teal'c)] and me on the last day, we just hung out together all day, and we couldn't stop crying. We could barely get through a scene without bawling our eyes out. I really have no idea what season six is going to be like without him." As for Shanks' character, Tapping revealed what may become of him. "There is a possibility that he could come and visit every now and again," she said. "He's ascended basically to a higher plane of existence, but I'm sure that that's not aired yet, so I'm not sure if I can actually say that. ... Any scenes where there's crying involved, it was real." Will Shanks be replaced? "Certainly the door's been open for another character to come in, but I'm not sure whether or not they're going to use this character or not, and I keep trying to find out, and I keep getting, 'We don't know yet, we haven't decided yet,'" Tapping said. "So, it's very frustrating going back into season six with no idea who's going to be on SG-1, or whether it's just going to be the three of us and guest stars, or whether we're going to have a permanent member. We have no idea." For her part, Tapping said she is continually finding new ways to keep her character fresh. "It would be so easy to lapse into autopilot," she said. "I actually issued myself a challenge at the beginning of season five, because I knew the character had developed so much over the four years, and I didn't know what was going to happen to her in season five. And so I sort of issued myself a challenge of finding a new way into the character. Which meant everything from the way she walks to rediscovering her whole physicality to rediscovering her love of certain things and what makes her tick. ... It helped me to reinvent her in my own mind, which made it interesting then to play her."
Posted By: Azziz Jan 15, 2002 - 04:07 pm | | Thanks for the info. It will be weird to not have Daniel and the actor that plays him on the show. I read he left because his character wasn't featured enough. Not a hard feelings thing, but just he felt it had run it's course. The movie was more of a buddy flick and the TV show was more of a ensemble and so he left at the end of his contract. Gotta respect someone who stays to honor their contract tho.
Posted By: Nomad Feb 12, 2002 - 08:46 am | | SCI FI Clarifies SG-1 Casting In response to rumors that it was responsible for the departure of Michael Shanks from Stargate SG-1, the SCI FI Channel issued a statement saying it never requested any cast changes to the show. "SCI FI Channel loves the series and has absolutely never requested that any cast changes be made," the network said. "We're very excited to add Stargate SG-1 to our original programming line-up, and although we regret the loss of Michael Shanks, we think that Corin Nemec will be a great new presence in the cast." Nemec (Parker Lewis Can't Lose) will join the cast when the series begins its sixth season on SCI FI in June. Shanks, who played Daniel Jackson, will leave the show at the end of the current season, which is running on Showtime. Stargate started out on Showtime, which will air original episodes through the end of season five. An all-new sixth season of the show will debut on SCI FI in June, and SCI FI will also rerun the first five seasons in order, beginning in the fourth quarter of 2002. Reruns of the series also air in various syndicated markets.
News from www.scifi.com SG-1 Fans Welcome Nemec Corin Nemec, who plays new team member Jonas Quinn on the SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate SG-1, told SCI FI Wire that fans have embraced his character for the most part. Nemec filled a vacancy left by Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson), who left the series at the end of season five. Nemec joins established cast members Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge. Fan reaction to Nemec "so far, I guess, it's been pretty good," Nemec said in an interview while signing autographs at Comic-Con International in San Diego. "There was a small backlash from people who were really, really ardent fans of Michael Shanks, who is a really great guy, too. And I loved his character as well, so I can understand them missing him. But it was his choice to leave the show, and I can understand him wanting to move on and do new things, and I'm really glad to be a part of the show now. I mean, it closed one door, but it opened another door, and I'm glad to be able to walk through it." Nemec plays Quinn, a human from another world, who was present at the accident that gave Jackson a dose of radiation poisoning. In the current sixth season of SG-1, Quinn has become a member of SG-1, with a metahuman capacity for absorbing knowledge. "Ultimately the main point in the character is to have him be able to bring something to the show that is new and also to be a member of the team and to bring something to the team that is also new," Nemec said. "Not just to have some of the same qualities that Daniel Jackson's character had, which is necessary in order to propel the show forward. He's got to have some of the same intellectual qualities, but what else the character brings we'll see as the show develops. But hopefully it's a passion for action and a passion to make things go right."
Posted By: Nomad Aug 14, 2002 - 08:15 am | | I'll admit that the character has grown on me. I really should post more on SG1's episodes. Sorry, been a little busy with Farscape as well.
I'm still at a stage where he really hasn't done anything for me, one way or another. Then again, Daniel didn't really start to grow on me until the middle of the first season. Unfortunately for Jonas, he doesn't have the luxury of several seasons to win us over. Personally, I think they're having problems intergrating the character into the team. Don't get we wrong, he has endearing qualities but he just doesn't seem to fit and it isn't just Jack that's having problems getting used to him. __!_!__ Gizmo
I have to agree with Gizmo on this one. Daniel Jackson was a favourite of mine, and I really miss him when I watch the new eps. of SG-1. I am trying to keep an open mind, though. It reminds me a little bit of B5 when they attempted to "replace" Ivanova with Captain Cupcake. Jonas seems to be an attempt to "clone" Daniel Jackson...I think it would have been better to add a totally different character. Oh well. I'm still watching...I've been a SG-1 fan since day one. Or, since the original flick. :-)
Like most late-season replacements, the Jonas character doesn't have lot of time to get established. Unlike Captain Cupcake (er, Lockley), Ezri Dax or Annika Hansen (7 of 9), TPTB haven't really given the Jonas character any significant differences from Daniel (aside from *not* being an archeologist/linguist) with which to build his own niche in the story. I understand that they wanted to replace Daniel with someone who had a strong moral compass but so far it hasn't worked, mainly because that point of view has been unneeded so far this season. __!_!__ Gizmo
About.Com talked with Joseph Mallozzi (SG-1's Supervising Producer) who briefly mentioned the sci-fi show's fate: "We don't have a definite from Sci-Fi Channel about next season, and there's all that stuff going on with Farscape. Either way, though, the Sci-Fi Channel has been so good to and for the show. We really can't complain. If we do come back, that's great, but "Full Circle" will see the return of Daniel Jackson, and I can tell you it's a bittersweet story, a fitting end to the season, hopefully not the series". Above from http://www.darkhorizons.com/news.htm DK: Well from what I hear Sci-Fi Channel are ditching Sci-Fi shows, doesn't that tell you something.....but I suppose they could always change there mind....
Seventh Season a definite SCI FI Renews Stargate The SCI FI Channel renewed its original series Stargate SG-1 for a full seventh season, the network announced. SCI FI ordered 22 new episodes from MGM. Richard Dean Anderson will stay in his role as both the series' star and executive producer. "Stargate fans are everywhere," SCI FI president Bonnie Hammer said in a statement. "The ratings prove it. We are delighted to renew SG-1 for a new season. Clearly the show has done phenomenally well for SCI FI, both with original and acquired episodes, and we look forward to another record-breaking year."
Yea, and the Sci-Fi channel never lies! I have been a Stargate SG-1 fan from the very beginning...and I am pleased that it has been renewed for another season. Yet, it is bittersweet, as I am still trying to understand why Sci-Fi dumped Farscape in favour of Stargate. I think that the SFC 'bit off more than it could chew' in acquiring SG-1. I would have preferred that SG-1 stayed in syndie and have the promised 5th season of Farscape. I don't believe anything the idiots at the SFC say. Bonnie Hammer was also the person that promised us additional seasons of Farscape and whom in every interview and/or article I have read about her supporting Farscape always said "Farscape Forever." The Sci-Lie channel. What a disappointment. I wish someone out there in cable-TV land would start up a REAL Sci-Fi channel. I'm really sick of the SFC's programming...all these crapola slasher flicks, Chuckie and the lot. And **Oh Boy** A Star Trek OS chain reaction on Monday for Veterans Day. **Yawn** Could they possibly get any less inspired? Sheesh. But, I am not watching the SFC much anymore. I would love to see their ratings fall. Maybe they might think about how they betrayed their Farscape fans. Yeh, there are lots of Stargate fans out here, but there are also lots of Farscape fans!
More good news if you can believe it, they say Michael Shanks will return as a regular cast member, playing Dr. Daniel Jackson again. Well yes more Farscape would be good, if only I could see it, only seen season one so far, and now it looks like I will be seeing season one again, I must be in some time loop
Bummer Dark Knight, that you have only been able to see season one of Farscape. By the end of the 3rd season it was really rolling! I hope that it is true that Michael Shanks aka Daniel Jackson returns to Stargate. I have really missed his character. That **would** be good news.
Judge Wants More Stargate Chris Judge, who plays the Teal'c on the SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate SG-1, told SCI FI Wire that he's pleased that his negotiations for a seventh season of the show, the show's second on SCI FI Channel, worked out. "It was just basically a matter of dotting the i's and things like that," Judge said in an interview. "I was looking forward to coming back." Judge added, "I think we're just hitting our stride now, so why stop? And next season, Rick [Anderson] will still be with us, and Michael Shanks, who is one of my best friends, will be back [as Daniel Jackson]. So it's going to be great. I'm just glad all the business stuff worked out. It gives us another year to evolve these characters." Judge especially wants to learn more about his own character. "Is he going to make Earth his home? Is he going to settle down with some Earth woman? Is he going to fall in love with someone from another planet and stay there? Is he going to travel the universe and try to liberate Jaffa? Those are the things I want to see for Teal'c." New episodes of Stargate SG-1 will air Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT, beginning Jan. 10, 2003, with the episode "Unnatural Selection." Production is underway now in Vancouver, B.C., on the show's upcoming seventh season. from http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire
SG-1 Enters Year Seven Production began Feb. 24 on the seventh season of SCI FI Channel's top-rated original series Stargate SG-1, the network announced. The series continues to score high with viewers, both in its original episodes and in its repeats from other seasons. The Jan. 10 winter premiere of the series delivered a 1.7 rating (1.3 million households). The show continued to perform well throughout the month, peaking at 1.9 (1.5 million households), and earning a 1.7 (1.3 million households) average for January--a 70 percent improvement over the time-period average one year ago. This is the strongest January performance of any show in SCI FI Channel history. The series also excelled on Monday nights with a regularly scheduled block of four back-to-back episodes from past seasons. The Monday episodes scored a 1.4 average for January, making it the second-highest-rated night of the week following SCI FI Fridays. The upcoming season (the second original season produced exclusively for SCI FI) will feature the highly anticipated return of fan favorite Michael Shanks as civilian archaeologist Daniel Jackson. After seven years on the air, Stargate SG-1now ranks among the longest-running science fiction series on television. DK: Is that because they can all the good sci-fi shows?, I'm sorry to say this but I think it's days are numbered, it is after all on the sci-fi channel...........
Posted By: Nomad Feb 25, 2003 - 06:39 am | | Well, I suppose that Babylon 5 would have counted had it not been written as a 5 year Arc. Sheesh
Tapping Mulls SG-1 Romance Amanda Tapping, who plays Maj. Samantha Carter on the SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate SG-1, told SCI FI Wire that upcoming seventh-season episodes could delve into Carter's romantic life. But Tapping added in an interview that romance won't likely include a relationship between Carter and Col. Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson). "I don't think so, not given the parameters of where they are right now," she said. Tapping added, "I think it's almost enough to know there's a huge attraction between these two people, and that there's a huge amount of love and respect between them. Certainly there are times when it bubbles to the surface, when they're like, 'Ooh, yikes, I forgot that I really am attracted to this guy.' But I can't do anything about it. ... If we push that envelope and have them consummate the relationship in some way, like going fishing, that would be a big mistake." Stargate is currently in production for its seventh season, which will debut on SCI FI this summer.
Posted By: Nomad Feb 27, 2003 - 03:46 am | | Well, I am sure that the writers will definately put the romance of Carter and O'Neil up front when the series comes to an end.
SG-1's Tapping Gets Active Amanda Tapping, who co-stars as Maj. Samantha Carter on the SCI FI Channel original series Stargate SG-1, told SCI FI Wire that she will get to showcase Carter's rarely seen action chops in a seventh-season episode entitled "Space Race." "It's a cool episode that we're actually shooting as we speak," Tapping said in an interview this week. "It's kind of a video-game episode, and Sam engages in this space race in this ship with an alien that we'd encountered last season." Tapping added that Sam is an adrenaline junkie who rides a motorcycle to work, and the change of pace is right up her alley. "So it's interesting to play her [in] this episode, because she's a lot more fun, a little cheekier," she said. "She's like a little kid, because everything is all about this race, and she really gets off on it." Tapping said that she has long believed her character possessed an inner fire. But she was careful not to overplay it in "Space Race," she added. "I was talking to the director yesterday, after we'd finished a scene, and he said, 'Wow, I love what Sam is doing. I love what you're doing here with her,'" she said. "I said, 'It's not too much, because you can't just suddenly bring in this whole new side of the character.' It's something that's always been there, and now it gets to be right at the forefront, the kind of style that she has of 'Woo-hoo! I get to be in a race.'" Stargate SG-1 is currently in production for its seventh season, which will debut on SCI FI June 13.
