In the "Hero" topic, Earth_Monkey suggested that Blake's 7 is a rip-off of ST. What does everyone think about this? My first reaction is to disagree, but I'm open to discussion.

I totally disgree with Earth_Monkey , I just don't see how this could be..

The Two shows are very different....different story lines...different spaceships...

Both great shows....

One question, Who is Earth_Monkey?

No way is it anything like star trek. To start with the characters are all flawed and it lacks the optimism of the star trek series.

It is much darker with a theme that runs through the episode. there is a specific aim as oposed to the broad exploration of the universe. one main vilain (The best in Sci-Fi to my opinion) as oposed to many unknown dangers.

don't get me wrong - I love star trek but it is completely different. If anything it is closer in spirit to Babylon five. But (and I heard somewhere it influenced B5 - Is that actualy true?) But even these two series are very different.

I may be exagurating but in my eyes Blake's 7 is one of a kind.

ST may be similar to B5 in that they both praise certain ideals commonly held- such as selflessless, loyalty, peace, tolerance.

In the same vein, you may also say that the majority of the genre is supporting the same values and ideas. It doesn't make it all the same it what gives it common ground.

In this case I believe the term is Space opera and it was definitely was not invented by ST. E.E. Doc. Smith went down that road long before anyone else.
