Hi there. What's your classic scifi movie?Mine is Forbiden planet, special effects by Disney!! Colin.
Posted By: Bmat Mar 31, 2002 - 01:10 pm | | My favorite classic SF movie is Forbidden Planet. The Day the Earth Stood Still is another I consider a classic. Star Wars may be called fantasy, but I think of it as SF and think it encouraged the SF genre, so I would call it a classic, but I think some would not agree.
Posted By: Nomad Apr 01, 2002 - 08:13 am | | I think I would have to go with "War of the Worlds" or " When the Earth Stood Still".
Though I find Nomad and Bmat's very eclectic choices to be classic indeed , I enjoy the first and second Space Odyssey films . Probably because of the pacifist aftermath and the reverence to life holistic suggestion added to the scifi elements which are to some reasonable extent bridged with contemporary technology .
Posted By: Bmat Apr 01, 2002 - 01:20 pm | | Oh yes, how could I forget 2001!!!! My husband and I saw that on our first date! That is also a classic.
Posted By: Nomad Apr 02, 2002 - 07:44 am | | With a little prodding from Karina...Ill add one of the favorites starring Harrison Ford: "Blade Runner"
Hi There. It is quite a tuff one!! The Omege Man 2001,2010,Close Encounters..........and on! I will stick with my first choice,i think Robbi made the differance. It will be interesting to see who gets the biggest vote.Colin.
Posted By: Nomad Apr 03, 2002 - 06:03 am | | Perhaps the Master will put the question into a poll?
Hi There. The Master can certainly put it to a poll! I keep thinking of other Scifi classics! Sticking with my first choice.I didn't know Disney done the special effects for Forbiden planet.I dig out my classic scifi videos and watch them from time to time. That's when i noticed it on the credits. All the best to you guys.Colin.
Blade Runner ! Thank you for reminding , Nomad *S* The film where H.Ford is said to have lost the leading role to the other actor of fame who stars in the masterpiece . Only that this great actor is known to the cinephil both in the villain and hero capacity . Here , H.Ford's adversary plays chess and symbolically holds a pigeon , in his own blood *s* Oxymoron though it might be , the particular villain character here is worth examining , especially in the scifi frame which the story allows . Are there any social nuances projecting into the future of mankind , one wonders . The acting of the couple ( Ford and Hauer ) adds much to the rich scifi properties and suggestions in the film , on top of the director's miracles in the plot development speed .
Ok, I will. My poll is rather...lets call it neglected...anyway The only question I have is what is the cut off? Blade Runner is a astounding film, but it isn't what I think of when someone asks about "classic" SF. Classic to me means The Day the Earth Stood Still and other pre-2001 A Space Oddessey movies. To me 2001 marked the beginning of the "modern era" where special effects took a much higher profile and SF stopped automatically being considered a "B movie". So is that a good cut off? So how are these for candidates for a poll? - Colossus: The Forbin Project - The Day the Earth Stood Still - Forbidden Planet - Godzilla, King of the Monsters - Metropolis - The Incredible Shrinking Man - Robinson Crusoe on Mars - This Island Earth - The Time Machine (1960) - The Thing (1951) - War of the Worlds - When Worlds Collide I think that's about the limit of what I can comfortably fit in a poll. Any that I've woefully overloooked? Or that I'm nuts for listing here? BTW: I'll refrain from listing my personal fave from this bunch to avoid any potential for undo influence
Posted By: Nomad Apr 04, 2002 - 08:46 am | | Wow...I had forgotten about Metropolis. Might that be the first true scifi? I cant think of any others that shuld be removed or added to your list. But I guess I would have to agree with your analysis of the cutoff for "classic" Scifi.
Hi.I am sorry i have been absent for a while.Got caught up in some real life stuff:-(( How about the 14th of this month as the final post? Colin.
I'll be changing the poll this weekend...tonight's Farscape and I can't think of anything else LOL!
Hi guys! I just saw some classic scifi movies about a weekend. I had a practical marathon! It was awesome! My favorite one would have to have been Forbidden Planet. See Ya!

Posted By: Valen Aug 21, 2003 - 05:34 am | | Always fun to set back and think about old scifi. Some of my enjoyable times are early winter weekend mornings, before the kids wake up, setting down drinking coffee and munching on something usually not associated with breakfast, and watching an old scifi flick. Shortly after VHS and Beta machines came out I started taping the oldies. I have a pretty decent collection, though some of the types are a bit old now and in need of replacement. Luckily you can get them on DVDs at the store now. Most of them anyway. Some of my favorites.. Earth Verses the Flying Saucers Genesis II The Quester Tapes This Island Earth The Thing (the original one) THEM Colossus, The Forbin Project Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea City Beneath The Sea TOO many to mention here... "classic scifi", the food for the Gods!
Posted By: Nomad Aug 21, 2003 - 06:19 am | | THEM always scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
Posted By: Bmat Aug 21, 2003 - 11:45 am | | The original Thing gave me many nightmares as a child. brrrr Colossus was an eye-opener.
Posted By: Sindatur Aug 22, 2003 - 08:32 am | | I think my favorites are: War of the Worlds Invasion of Body Snatchers Queen of Outer Space (Botchano, Zsa Zsa Gabor, this one is hilarious, we watch it at least a couple times a year)
