Posted By: BaanJu Nov 15, 2004 - 06:28 am | | The year was 2379, 50 years after the final devastating bombs rocked the earth. The entire earth was absorbed in the radiation clouds. Every major city in the world was hit, Tokyo, Paris, New York, L.A. No one in the cities survived. Some were lucky enough to make into the fallout shelters those chosen few. Others toughed it out in the wild reverting back to their primal instincts. Yet some came out and brought America back into an age with technology although not as great as before. The laser weapons no longer worked for some reason. In a vault on the edge of the American continent our story begins. The story of the man who would quest to save his vault and end up saving the world. "Jenai get up man, come on get up," the voice was urgent, as was the hand that shook him. "I'm up alright," Jenai sat up he was naked down to the waist. As he climbed out of bed the young vault dweller, Kin stepped back. His eyes were involuntarily drawn to Jenai's chest were many scars stood out due to his numerous battle scars. Unlike everyone else in the vault, that had been born and raised here, Jenai was an outsider he had been here for almost ten years, arriving here when he was only 17. "Come on Jenai the Vault commander wants to see you he says it is urgent." Kin sounded very jumpy. "Alright, alright I'm coming just hold your horses," Jenai snatched up a shirt that had hung over his chair it had a large number 16 on the back as did everyone elses clothes and the suit he wore was a dark blue just like everyone's in the vault. "What's a horse?" asked Kin. "Nevermind," replied Jenai, remembering that the young man had lived here his entire life. Hustled and pushed Jenai slipped into his shirt and followed Kin to the elevator. They stepped in and told the computer to take them to Command Station, which was located on level 9 the last floor. The elevator started with a loud ker-klunk and then started down swiftly and smoothly. As the small elevator ground to a halt the two climbed out and ran into Parla. Her slim muscular body was elegantly made. Her dark brown hair fell into sharp contrast against her pale skin. She was the combat instructor for the vault. Jenai had seen here fight many times yet he had never interfered even when she made mistakes, which was often. "Hello Jenai," her voice was soft and lilting. "Well met," replied Jenai. "I take it we are both going to see the commander then?" "I suppose we are would care to accompany us?" asked Jenai as he held out his hand. "I believe I will," she replied. So together they walked down the well-lit corridor to the large steel door that stood at its end. Coming abreast of the door they slapped the palm stud and entered. Instantly they were overwhelmed with the sounds of keys being struck on a dozen different keyboards and the calls of commands being given to the tech staff. And there sat the Vault commander in his large doughnut shaped chair. The Vault 16 commander was an oldish man of about 60 years. His hair was thick and solid whit along with his beard. He had light blue eyes and a stern strong face. "Ahh Jenai," the commander's voice carried easily over the noise and commotion in the room. "I see you came to me and picked miss Parla on the way, good-good." "What is it you need Commander," asked Jenai as he stood at ease unlike the other two who stood at full attention. "Well Jenai I need tell you something that is of the utmost secrecy. One of our computer chips has malfunctioned and been destroyed. We need you to go out and find us another chip. This chip is the very chip that purifies our contaminated water." "I see, well this seems very important and well you guys did save my life. So I will do this quest for you my friend," stated Jenai. "You will be given command of a small squad to help you with your mission. Four other vault dwellers will be taken with you. Parla for her fighting skills. Kin will also go because you may require his computer and thieving abilities. I am also sending Drod with you because he is our best shot and I know that the outer world is harsh and you may be forced to kill your fellow man. Last but not least Lisay will go with you her doctor skills will be very useful to you. You will be allowed to bring as much equipment as you can carry." "Alright when do we leave?" asked Parla. "Right now, time is of the essence, as they would say." The trio turned and walked away. Well at least he'd get to see the outside world again. It had been a long time since he'd been outside. The three boarded the elevator and went to their respective living quarters, so that they could pack for the journey. Jenai opened up his duffel bag and began to roll up his clothes and lay them neatly inside. After his clothes were packed he pulled out a long trunk from under his bed. The box was about six feet in length. Placing the box on the bed he opened it up and gently placed its contents on the bed. When he was finished he looked at the weapon spread out on the bed. His weapons. There was a gunbelt and two Smith&Wesson .44s. There was also a small sawed-off double-barreled shotgun along with a beautiful single shot 10mm rifle. He belted on the twin holster gun belts and strapped the holsters down to his legs. He hung his shotgun from his right shoulder and slipped his shotgun into his back holster then slipped his backpack, which covered his shotgun completely. Last but not least he belted on his long fifteen inch hunting knife to his leg right beside his left-hand gun. He picked up his three ammo belts and belted them on, he had his rifle ammo and pistol ammo crossed across his chest and his shotgun ammo belted around his waist. When he was ready he headed to the elevator and waited for the others to meet him. It didn't take long. Parla arrived first wearing one free hung 10mm pistol, along with a 10inch knife and a long metal staff. Kin arrived next closely followed by Drod. Kin was carrying two single shot 9mm pistols and a small belt of throwing knives strapped to his waist. Drod carried three rifles one was a .303-hunting rifle hung from his right shoulder, another was a .44 Henry strapped across his back and a third, his 10mm. single-shot, he carried in his hand. They climbed onto the elevator and went up to the surface to meet Lisay. She was standing their, her small skinny form clad in a doctor’s coat and wearing a small backpack. She carried no weapon aside from a small four-inch knife strapped to her side. They could see the bulk of the doctor supplies in her bag she looked as though she carried enough supplies to doctor up a small army. "Well let's go then," Jenai said as he stepped forward and slapped the palm stud. An alarm went off instantly telling the operators that someone was opening the main door. They asked for confirmation and received it from the Vault Commander. The huge door slid to the side, it was about 2 yards thick, solid steel. AS that one opened they stepped into the small hallway on the other side and the door behind them closed. As soon as it slid completely shut the door that led to the outside slowly slid open. Unlike the other door this one was five yards thick of solid steel. They stepped outside and typed in the code to shut and lock the door back. Well, thought Jenai, I guess we better carry on with this quest. He motioned for them to follow and he led off through the small canyon. There were large rats everywhere but they were not molested. As they stepped out of the dark canyon and into the bright sunlight, the intense heat of the desolate desert hit them. They stood there a moment allowing there eyes to grow accustomed to the light.
