I think as long as you don't overdo it, it's great. I prefer to read stories that are in the point of view of someone who has the same feelings and problems as I can relate to. A dragon with those feelings isn't going to cut it for me. I am reading a book in the view of deer. I dunno, it actually has potential, but I think the author can't write worth crap. It's really hard to relate between yourself and a deer. I mean, in that story, the deer are TOO human in nature. It's unrealistic to me.

Greetings, I am new to this forum, so please bear with me.
Anyway, I enjoy playing around with ideas that involve a race of beings I created once. I just wanted to know what other people think of this race and any suggestions that you guys might have for me. Here they are:
Race Name: Aesi
Physical Description: Very human-like. In fact, are pretty much human. The entire race are characterized by their blonde hair and blue eyes. Only their emperor has different coloring, brown eyes and brown hair. Their average height is about 6'4".
Technological Level: The Aesi have mastered faster-than-light travel.
Personality Characteristics: The Aesi generally look down upon other races. The only exception would be humans that originated from Earth. The Aesi are very xenophobic and are also don't trust Artificial Beings (robots, androids, cyborgs, etc.), either. During times of war (which, the Aesi are often in, due to their high aggression and strong military) the Aesi capture beings of other races and use them as slaves.
Religion: The Aesi as a race do not have a religion. This results mostly from the fact that they are immortal.
Government: All of the Aesi live in their own nation, which is a fascism

tsk tsk. giving them no religion deflates their potential. and besides, if they're immortal and extremly powerful with aggressive militaries why are they xenophobic? and, if they've mastered ftl tech why is it they don't trust robots which are basically just walking computers. If you notice, the base for the computer and the robot are the same, so unless they don't trust their ships (which is suggesting a mind of their own like Farscape) why don't the robots?

well...do they worship themselves then? do they think that other races should bow down to their military might and worship them as immortals? I don't know...you could draw a parallel between them and us and draw in a moral if you wanted to...

draw in a moral and make it just another criticism on a dying society. Gene Roddenbury did enough of that already. your call though. I shy away from moralistic themes because a. I hate butt-kissing and b. you always offend someone while someone else worships you. gets you characterized.

I was about to say I like moralistic themes, but I just realized I'm overstepping the boundaries of the word "moral." :P It doesn't have to be moralistic, but it could be something similar... For example, Mona Lisa Smile has a theme about learning... Everyone always has so much to learn, even the brilliant teacher.

You can't make everyone happy, and in the book world, those who try to make all the readers happy simply fabricates a hollow story to begin with. With so many opinions floating around, everyone is bound to find something wrong with what is written.

As for moralistic themes. Let's just call it dramatic themes or adult themes and be done with it. I find often times that the best plots and subplots don't deal with morals at all.

First of all, yes, I agree, no themes equal hollow story. However, just "[drawing] in a moral if you wanted to," is pointless and often found by the readers to be fake writing. Useless themes like that seem to just be repeats of how much the government sucks whenever the story takes place. I suppose I should have made myself more clear. By shying away from moralistic themes, I try to avoid having people overrun the governments, and I avoid having too much promiscuous sex, because you always get hit hard with that one.
-alrighty then, think I covered everything I wanted to-

Well, regardless of the planet or times... I don't think that any government, regime, or empire gets to be so powerful by playing favorites and playing nice. With that true fact in mind, you are also bound to have resistance groups and freedom fighters who oppose of the strong, and often times, immoral attitudes of the government in power.

So whether you feel that a story dealing with the overthrow of politics is old, it is still a mature theme and something that will always remain true. When greed gets out of control, someone always steps in to stomp it out.

Now I personally like a story that deals with deviations in the plot and characters but that stuff is true to life.

Finally checked back here...
Anyway, allow me to elaborate as to:
First-why the Aesi are xenophobic. The Aesi are xenophobic because of the quick growth that many races show. In the scifi universe in which they exist, humanity has reached their technology level in just a few millenia (I think that I shall have it about 4 or 5 thousand years) while the Aesi took nearly ten times that. The biggest thing they fear is the incredible growth of most other races. Their own growth is limited because of very low fertility.
Second-why the Aesi distrust artificial beings. The Aesi distrust artificial beings mostly for their lack of emotion. The Aesi feel that emotions keep power in check. It isn't really robots they fear, but machines that can make not only complex decisions but also make more of themselves.
I am rethinking the religion part.
