Something different.

by Silvanus

339 words.

Jenny stood on the porch, looking in the screen door at her father who sat at the kitchen table looking back at her. She was late again and she knew she was in trouble. Gathering her strength she pushed open the door and walked in, letting the old wooden frame slam closed behind her. The man at the table didn’t move, just sat there looking at her. She knew he was mad, and it wasn’t that that got to her it was how he could just sit there with that look that made her so scared.

She had never known blue eyes could be so cold. But his eyes were like ice water, she got goose-bumps just standing there. She turned to walk down the hallway to her room and winced as she heard the wooden chair legs squeak across the floor behind her. With a start she ran up the stairs to her room and locked the door behind her, listening to his heavy footsteps up the stairs and down the hall to her door.

“Late yesterday, late day before that, and late today,” his voice was gruff and tired, “What i...

Day 13.

by Silvanus

Goal: 200 words.
Written: 350 words

Verity looked down into the hole and then pulled back and retched on the floor. Below, in a pool about five feet below the trap door, at least twenty bodies floated in a deep red liquid. She fell back and looked around for help, seeing Todd coming down the stairs she yelled, “Todd, what do we do?”

Todd looked up, seeing Verity on the floor by the open trap door, a puddle of her own fluids next to her, and Jon, on the ground twitching, severely burned. He was immediately assaulted and thrown into Jon’s nightmare. Seeing Jon chained on the burning ground. Verity bound to a stone tablet, the devil himself about to have his way with her.

Todd knew it was wrong, but what could he do? He turned to Jon, momentarily abandoning Verity, this wasn’t her nightmare; she’d be fine. He looked down at the chains around Jon, and concentrating, split a few links, allowing Jon to free himself, although he was still horribly burned where the chains had touched b...

Day 12.

by Silvanus

Goal: 200 words.
Written: 301 words.

Verity ran down the stairs, taking two at a time in her haste to get to Jon who was screaming as burns appeared across his arms and face. She jumped the last two stairs and dropped to a knee, pinching his upper arm sharply to try and break the illusion, but not succeeding.

She looked around, on the floor next to the altar was a trap door that she sensed the magic was hidden behind. She ran over to it, blasting it open with a bolt of lightning from her hand and falling to her knees next to it and looking inside.

Back upstairs Todd was still deflecting and absorbing attacks. The man just didn’t seem to run out of energy.

“Don’t you ever do anything but block, you’re no damn fun!” The man yelled, accompanying it with a particularly violent fireball that knocked Todd back to the wall despite his blocking spell. He rose and began to draw a complex pattern, culminating with a violent slash of his arm that opened a large cut across the man’s chest.

The...

Day 11.

by Silvanus

Goal: 200 words.
Written: 328 words.

“Something’s wrong.” Todd said suddenly, turning to look at Verity. “Horribly wrong.”

“I can feel it to, that book is powerful.” She turned to look down the alleyway and then back at Todd, “Do you think we should,”

“Yeah,” Todd responded, cutting off the end of her sentence and turning to open the door into the temple. “Keep close and keep your eyes open.”

The two walked into the temple and turned right, following the same path Jon had down the first hallway and into the second hall. They came to the spot where the stairway had been but found instead that the wall had closed itself across the point of entry.

“It’s behind here I swear,” Todd groaned, pushing on the wall in hopes that it would just swing open, but achieving little more than tiring himself.

“Maybe there’s another way?” Verity suggested, turning and looking around. “Oh no, Todd.. he’s back..”

“Who, Jon?” Todd asked, turning to follow her look and seeing the man from the alleyway.

Day 10.

by Silvanus

Goal: 200 words.
Written: 290 words.

After the man had disappeared at the other end of the hall Jon moved from his hiding spot, taking a right and following another wider hallway until it a stairwell led down from one side. He took this and came out into a large room with an altar in the center.

This was the room, he knew it. He walked forward and was assaulted immediately by the powers of the book. Two candles, one on either side of the altar, burst into purple flame, shooting balls of magical fire at him that burned his clothes and singed his flesh upon contact. Jon backed to the wall and tried in vain twice to dispel the magic without success. Before him he watched as the top of the altar slid off as if a sarcophagus and a bony hand reached out and pulled forth a body so wretched he Jon nearly threw up.

The body was decayed beyond belief, only shreds of flesh hanging on the bones. It had human shape, except for two wing-like appendages on its back. Jon groaned and watched as...
