How bout a test of courage. It would help to know more about this girl. Does she have any special abilities. Maybe she is a ranger to protect the world from vampires or at least finding out about them. Maybe she has metaphysical gifts that would be crushed if she were made a vampire. This may be out in left field, but some thing like psychic surgery. She has the special ability to channel healer and shaman of the past and use their gifts to cure physical illness and spiritual attack (Soul retrieval for example.) Making her a soul sucking vampire could ruin her gift or something.

Like I said out there. It never hurts to get a little crazy with ideals and then real them back in.

Uh, well, I'd like a bit more information... such as "usefulness" in what way? To feed or to turn, to make into a submissive slave, breeding, what?

If you're thinking in terms of loyalty, mental usefulness, then this is very subjective based on a person's willpower and ability to be brainwashed into servitude.

If you're thinking physiology, I'd go with blood and taste. The sweeter the blood, the more <insert adjective> the person is. Someone with sweeter blood could be a human with purer genetics and higher stock.

Considering that taste includes Sour, Sweet, Salty, and Bitter... there's a large range to define how and why someone tastes the way they do.

I get the idea that you must write some twisted stuff.

Yeah.

You didn't think I meant Ariel, that mistress of fairy dust.

Hee hee. You could have meant Ariel.

I just take a practical approach to solving literary problems. Rather than first relying on some mystic or magic answer, I try to roll back to basic ideas. In this case, dealing with vampires, I figured a biological determining factor could be the easiest solution.

I don't think I write twisted material, just unusual or different. I don't readily aim for twisted. I have one character who has his eyes sewn shut so that he may walk the dream, although I suppose plucking out one's eyes would be considered pretty twisted.
