City by candlelight

Post by Chaeronia »

This was inspired by my current work-in-progress that deals with dystopian city life, and by another poster here, Shootbootleg, whose use of the term 'Vermin City' I have shamelessly lifted (although I have asked for permission!).

**

The denouement of man
Is a Vermin City:
Industrial maw shelters
Granite teeth;
Steel limbs hide
Railway veins;
Scaffold skeleton beneath
Asphalt skin.

An aesthetic to match its people:
Grey and hard
Metallic vacuum.
Parasite not symbiote.

Where horrors become cliché.
A shrug of the shoulders
To a panoply of entropy.
Where the fallen fall
Into Obsidian hole.

Relentless tendril
To conquer all.
All?
All but...

...but in this Vermin city,
Within its gut where no eye-spies pry,
Two people stare at each other.
A candle, fluttering and fragile,
Threatened but alive,
Shines.

And with danger on all sides,
With knives and fists of concrete fallacy,
Where oxygen so nearly fails,
It shines brighter.
Against the dark it shines brighter.

If all it takes is
One idea to flatten a forest,
One cross word to ruin innocence,
One rusty inch of metal
To end the dreams of life,
So all it takes is
One stare between lovers,
One candle,
To make us, asphyxiated moths,
Breathe again.

When the majority is redundant
The minority stands,
And stares,
To be counted.

In this Vermin City,
Not yet hopeless.

'There's a vampire, dad. It's trying to get me.'
'I know, son,' he said softly. 'I saw it.'
'You saw it?'
'Yeah. I broke its bloody neck. I won't have no vampires in my house.'

Tnx for the update on the pictoresque scenery of Vermin City.
You shaded it quite fine.

Very nicely done. I especially liked this part.

If all it takes is
One idea to flatten a forest,
One cross word to ruin innocence,
One rusty inch of metal
To end the dreams of life,
So all it takes is
One stare between lovers,
One candle,
To make us, asphyxiated moths,
Breathe again.

It reminds me of that movie V for Vendetta.
I am the poet of the body and I am the poet of the Soul. The pleasures of heaven are with me and the pains of hell are with me. The first I graft and increase upon myself, the latter I translate into a new tongue.

-Walt Whitman-
