Philip Pullman

Post by Jack Sarratt »

I have just finished reading Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. I think it was a truly masterful piece of work. Lyra and Will are both brilliant characters for the series.
People say to not judge a book by its cover, but first make sure you picked the right title.

They're good. Lyra, the young heroine, lives in a world where people have a daemon that is manifest as an animal. These daemons are psychologically attached. It's rumored that someone is running experiments to detach children from their daemons. She becomes involved in the struggle to prevent the abominable acts. By the third book there have been world shifts back and forth between her world and ours.

Has Pullman written anything since then that matches up?

Apparently the movies are in production courtesy of Newline cinema, same chaps who funded LOTR...!!!

I recently watch theGolden Compas and think that they left WAY too much out. The books, as usual, have great details that the movie can not show.

Yeah, nommy, that's what seems to happen almost every time. However, for all that, I do like to see them attempt the movies, simply because they (occasionally) get it right, such as with "The Princess Bride".

Dark Materials trilogy is great. I read them and I was impressed. Golden Compass is a little bit boring.

I love the His Dark Materials trilogy. The Subtle Knife is my fav, probably because of Cittagazze and Will. I wasn't too thrilled with the Golden Compass movie, though. They left too much out, and I imagined Lyra to be a very different character than how she was portrayed in the film.

I wish daemons were real. I took the daemon test on the website a long long time ago and got a raven, haha. I could live with that. :D

Wonder what animal I would have ended up with? A wildcat perhaps? Maybe a wolf. Hmmm...
