Recommendations for Film Adaptation

Postby Gaff » Thu Mar 25, 2010 8:13 pm

I am a film writer-director-producer currently developing my first feature, an adaptation of a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Filmming won't begin on this project until Winter of next year, so between now and then I'd like to make another low-budget film.

I was hoping I could get some recommendations from the SV community. I'm seeking speculative fiction novels and novellas that are intelligent, character-driven, small in scope, and as original as possible. For this project, I'm not interested in comedy or horror. I leave the rest up to you.

Any and all recommendations will be greatly appreciated. If the film actually gets made, I will be sure to give special thanks credit to the suggester of the novel and to this site. Thank you.

Yes, please find your thinking cap and get this thread going. Perhaps your apprentice took it...

science fiction & and fantasy films are normally quite expensive to make.

elbow room is nice by Marion zimmer Bradley

perhaps a spaceship built of stone by Lisa tuttle.

oh and you have to hire the peaple who are on SV to help make the film, because we are cool and know were our towes are.

The Wood Beyond the World by William Morris.

One of Tolkien's inspirations, though you won't have to worry about rights issues as it's old enough to be in the public domain. It's a simple set up - no great battles or CG creatures - you'd just need some spooky woodland. I'd think the story would need to be modernised, it has a great mood to it but a bit of a dull ending for my liking, and the plot would appear to be open for manipulation.
