Exceeded maximum number of login attempts, how?

Postby Golden Knight » Tue Jan 18, 2011 4:13 pm

Well this is the first time I have encounter this. When I come to the site, my computer remembers name and password, which means when I come to the forum the boxes have those in, so just have to click login, no problem.

Today I click it and it took me to a page say I had exceeded the maximum number of login attempts or something like that.

How had I exceeded it? I only clicked once, or do I have to enter them manually from now on?

And how did not allow me in when it was the correct password?

Anyway enter the two additional words and got login in.

{Forgot the "g" in login in the title, fixed now}

Re: Exceeded maximum number of loin attempts, how?

that happened to me as well yesterday. Either there has been a glitch in the website, or someone had been trying multiple different passwords on log-in IDs to try to get in -- that's my paranoid guess.

However, I had the difficulty with log-in attempts. My loin is doing just fine, thankyouverymuch.

I pulled a loin muscle the other day hauling wood for some nightstands I'm building, but haven't experienced any login problems.

I'll look into it to see if it's a software issue, or if someone has been trying to hack accounts.

It doesn't appear to be a software issue.

Usually, as Asp mentioned, this is the result of an unauthorized individual or bot trying to gain access to an SV member's account by repeatedly using common passwords. The Forum's software limits the number of login attempts before you must verify yourself for this very reason.

BTW: It just happened to me too so it is likely some bot trying passwords.

Ah, but High Concepts, and Wisdom!

but also, if the ID could be hacked, it could be a method of discovering other passwords and sites that the victim would go to, includiing financial ones. And then there's just the challenge for some to mess things up.

Sometimes when I'm on here late at night, I see a new post-er putting up a message with a link, which is usually to a site that has a keystroke logger. Few people here would click on a link from an unknown new member. If the hacker could access someone's ID and impersonate them, a link from a recognized member of the community would be more likely to be used by others, and give the baddie whole bunches of victims.

It's something you will have to work on after you have converted the world to a diet of rice and salt.

Hmm. Happened again today. Either baddies have been lurking again, or my memory for log-ins is worse when I'm asleep.

And again today. Maybe I should start getting paranoid. Maybe I should create a 15 character password.

I just can't see the point of trying to brake into SV.
really.
I mean it would be funny if they broke in and then tip toed threw Ariels dragon den.
#1 : did you hear something?
#2: like what?
#1 that sound, breathing like.
Dragon: It was more of a gental snoring. Hello midnight snack.
