Well if we had Rings like Saturn, and we could get away with it (gravitational and orbital effects) I think it would be pretty cool and pretty beautiful to look at from the ground. However, I would rather have nine moons or something like that. All different colors, with multiple effects during sun and moon eclipses.

No way that would be one hell of a sun burn. As for the moons that would be confusing.

Also due to the rings Saturn gets belted by debris from its own Rings. Some how or another it never looses enough to reduce the relative mass of the rings.

The French once had a plan to construct a huge ring that would orbit the Earth. It was to be illuminated, and from down here, would appear to be the same size as the moon.

Whatever happened to that?

Ah, but think about this... what would another moon (or several) do to such things as tides, earth movement (as in quakes), and other such things? Potentially bad things, that's what. I have to be concerned about such since I'm living in the land of perpetual Earth movement....

As for a ring, if it was to be rock, that could be bad for the surface. If it was to be built in the manner the French were suggesting, it could be quite interesting. The main difficulties would be setting up to get and maneuver the materials to where they would be used, the sheer expense of the project (space is EXPENSIVE!), the potentialities for disaster inherent in it, and plus the idjits here on the Earth who would try to stop any such thing from being done, due to religious or other reasons.

Why would it be a good idea? Would it look 'cool'? Yep. Sure would, though anyone who grew up on Earth with it up there would likely just shrug at it. I think that there are more important things that could come of this idea: It would make for a very useful launch-point for true exploration of our solar system. It would be a place at which scientists could really experiment extensively to find the best ways to overcome difficulties that acceleration and weightlessness can cause, as well as providing a nice launch point for testing new sorts of propulsion systems for spacecraft. If it was large enough (as in not just a thin line), it could work as a place for a lot of people to live as well, though it wouldn't overcome the Earth's crowding problems, to say the least.

I see what your saying aldan and I agree, but you just killed my childhood fantasy.

I still think it would be cool to have another moon and it should be purple and we could name it after me!! Or you!! Or both whatever!
