Sounds like a good topic for this sub-forum

New planet around another star; closest to Earth-like yet.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18293978/

According to the article, it's 5 times as massive as the Earth, which means it's about fifty times as large (about12,000 miles in diameter), and within the "Goldilocks Zone" of the star. It's parent star is a red dwarf, and it's year lasts only 13 Earth days. Since red dwarf stars are so small, a close in orbit would still put it in the zone where water could remain in it's liquid form.

Needless to say, that's prime real estate for possible life to have emerged. This also, as the article says, makes it a prime candidate for future telescopes capable of detecting more Earth-like conditions, such as the presence of water or oxygen in it's atmosphere.

Coolness.

Oops! The planet is "50 % larger", not "50 times larger"

The thought occurs to me, that aside from people running and hiding from aliens, that the method used to detect the planet would not be able to distinguish between *one* largish planet or a planet and a moon, as long as the two add up to a 50 % mass larger than the Earth. So, it's possible that the "planet" consists of an Earth sized planet and a moon with 50 % of the mass, or two smaller moons that add up to 50 %.

Interesting, no?
