Assistance finding an old sci fi art book/artist

Postby Cernan » Thu Jan 14, 2010 8:51 am

Hi there!
This is my first post here, prompted mainly by desperation, and I was hoping I might find assistance.

In the mid-1980's I was equally enthralled and terrified by an art book in my school's library. The work was very much in the style of John Harris, but was vastly bleaker.

If my memory serves the scenes were often quite bright environments, overgrown ruins, bright deserts etc, which were off set against wrecked machinery (landers, rovers, ships etc) and the skeletons of marooned explorers in space suits half buried in sand, undergrowth. Lots of broken faceplates, wind etched bone.

The images have stuck in my mind for years but the internet has failed me thus far in trying to track down who created these images and the publication they were in, so if anyone has any ideas who this might have been i would greatly appreciate the information!
Thanks

Oddly enough, that exact same question was posted here (possibly in a different topic) a few years ago, about the exact same piece. The name of the book may have been "Great Space Battles" by Stewart Cowley. I had a copy around here somewhere, but it seems to have been misplaced.

I threw these posts out across the web not even remotely hopeful that I would find what I was looking for but within 12 hours i have my answer!!!!

Boikat, you were close with "great space battles"! and on the money with Stewart Cowley but it was the "ghostwrecks and derelicts" book that I should be after! Really appreciate the help though!

Ironically, I already have a copy of Cowley's "spaceliners" book on my shelf and never put 2 and 2 together.

Now to find a copy that doesn't cost £60!

Thanks again!

SpaceWreck: Ghostships and Derelicts of Space

Postby Qray » Fri Jan 15, 2010 6:18 am

Welcome to SV, Cernan. When it comes to referencing spaceship or aircraft design, Boikat is da man.

I love that 1970's style of science fiction artwork.

If you can't find it locally, you can find Stewart Cowley's SpaceWreck: Ghostships and Derelicts of Space (originally published by Hamlyn in 1979,) at Amazon.com. Depending on the conditon you want it in, you're looking at around $45.00 (US) for used, $91.00 (US) for one in "collectible" condition, and $113.00 (US) for new.
