This should be fun, considering the world we live in....
Have you ever noticed how some things just do not make any sense at all when you think about it?
An example to follow....

If you had your Oil Changed at the Hospital..
... You'd get:
A bill for just having your car parked in a stall to cover operating expenses of the building (electricity, water, and so on).
A bill from the guy that changed the oil. (labor)
A bill for the oil. (Materials used)
A bill for disposing of the old oil and filter contaminated by old oil. (Required by most states)
A bill from the parts guy for the new filter (Material used, but not a petroleum product).
A bill from the shop supervisor (Administrative costs).
And finally, a bill from some bean counter to sort them all out when you mail them in separately, and to make sure you pay them all.
And people wonder why medical bills are complicated?

Well, all those things do cost money. All those people have to get paid, all that infrastructure must be maintained to provide you with the services you get.
I work at a dance studio myself, and we charge a flat rate for lessons, rather than an itemized charge like the above. A lot of people think it's too expensive for dance lessons, but that's only because they're thinking about dance lessons. They're not thinking about the rent for the studio, the electricity, the water, heat, paychecks for all the teachers, commissions for the teachers, health insurance for the teachers, training for the teachers, etc. etc...
At least an itemized bill tells you all the little costs you're covering, rather than a lump payment that leaves you in the dark.

When I taught at the college, non-credit, I was surprised that I made such a small proportion of the income from the student fees. But then I realized there was the electricity, water, custodian, the use of the building, the grounds, the personnel and so on.

I have no problem paying all involved, but the point is you get (in the example) six or seven separate pieces of mail, each one a bill. Hving just one itemized bill would be just fine. I write one check, and let them fight over who gets how much of of that payment.

Q hands pim another oil filter.
Pim comes back with the oil filter looking like a piece of modern art.
Q hands pim another oil filter.
Pim comes back with the oil filter that has a bunch of holes punched into it.
Q hands pim another oil filter.
Pim comes back with the metal shears embedded in the end of the oil filter.
Q hands pim another oil filter. Takes away the shears and hands her a oil filter wrench.
Pim comes back with the center of the oil filter squeezed together.
Q hands pim another oil filter...

It strikes me as odd that I can spend a week on an essay or just one night and still get the same mark.

the teachers normally only read the first quarter of the essay skim to the end and read you conclusion.
or the flip a coin.
or they give you the grade you think normaly get.
Q
that is not how it happens thank you, I know what a oil filter wrench is.
you just have the habit of turning it in the wrong direction.
