Does IT involve physical binding of things?
Does IT involve navigation?

Is it a solid?
Can it be physically moved by a human being?
I'm going to die the way I've lived...poor, screaming, and naked.

Is it a solid? No
Can it be physically moved by a human being? Hmm, not really though IT involves things being moved by human beings.

Does IT involve physical binding of things? No
Does IT involve navigation? No

Is it war, is it technology? No to both

Is IT political? No
Is IT scientific? No

Did IT involve disease? Nope
Did IT involve astronomical observation? No

IT started with sailors, so they say.

Yes:

Sorta/maybe/kinda: involves humans causing things to move

No: Musical instrument/tradition; supernatural belief; weather related; sky/sun color; St. Elmo's Fire; astronomical observation; disease; political; scientific; technology; war; physical binding of things (no, not rope!); navigation; a solid;

Added bonus clue: Tolkien offered an alternate explanation. ;)

I'm sorry, I thought this would be very easy. So far you are not in the same galaxy. So, additional hint: You may try figuring out where sailors started IT.

woah ... let's see, we've got sea chantys, superstitions, navigation, knot tying, diseases galore, weather lore: what else do sailors do? I mean, besides spending way too much money on maintainence. Hmm. Perhaps another tack ...

Did Tolkien express this alternate explanation through Legolas?
Did Tolkien express this alternate explanation through Bilbo?

Well, of course: I forgot one -- is IT associated with alcohol?
Is IT beer brewing?

All right then, back to Bilbo.
Is IT associated with Grey Havens for Bilbo?
Is IT a metaphor for death?

Is IT associated with Grey Havens for Bilbo? No (wrong book!)
Is IT a metaphor for death? No. Definitely more humorous, though I have personally felt like dying as a result of IT at times!

OK, then, from the other end of the story ...
Is IT related to meals or feasts?
Is IT related to receiving visitors?
