In entertaining news...
My biggest horse is a bay New Zealand Standardbred. He used to go by the name 'Captain', when he retired from the race track. That changed when he killed a mountain lion that was trying to prey on the herd, and he's now known as 'Rambo'. He's the sort of horse who nibbles on very large chains on the off chance that they'll give in to his will. He hates every living thing except the very few people he adores, (he loves me, hates my grandmother), and will chase anything that moves.
We've been having a skunk problem lately. They're lured in by the apples and figs ripening in the orchard, and making their lairs around the yard. So, last night, I went out to feed after dark. I heard Rambo thundering up the pasture, but didn't think anything of it until a very large adult skunk came galloping under the gate, mere feet ahead of 1400 pounds of irritated, offended horse, and about 2 feet in front of my ATV. The skunk, heedless of the heart attack I was suffering, scuttled on up the road.
I have no bloody clue how Rambo and I both escaped being sprayed. He was very pleased with himself, but I think my heart is still doing double-time.
(Although, since we have mountain lions moving down into the hills in anticipation of winter, I'm glad to see that he's still mean and strong as ever.)
