A Mercenary's Journey

[Jack Sarratt]

"True, but then I don't usually speak to people. I once went three missions without speaking. One-and-a-half years of silence. Besides, it unsettles people, and I want to make a good impression."

[Mr_D]

"I guess so." Ryu said with a slight smile. "Well, we should get going."

[Jack Sarratt]

"Where? I have been wandering for quite some time now. I don't seem to be welcome in most of the civilized parts of the world. For obvious reasons."

[Mr_D]

"If I knew where I was going do you think I would have stopped to ask for directions?"

[Jack Sarratt]

Rebunanta thought for a second. "I remember hearing about a small merchant encampment a short distance from here. Perhaps they could use a couple of hired swords. You know, protection in exchange for food and a place to sleep."

[Mr_D]

"Sounds good to me. I've haven't eaten in days." Ryu groaned.

[Jack Sarratt]

"Your lucky you met me then. Here, try these." Rebunanta handed Ryu some strips of what looked like dried venison from underneath his cloak."They're not that good, but you get used to the taste."

[Mr_D]

Ryu eagerly devoured it.

"Great, about ten more and I'll feel good as new."

[Jack Sarratt]

"I'm surprised. I ate one and spit it up about five minutes later. Those things are horrid!"

Rebunanta looked at Ryu. "Well, at least you won't go hungry. Here." And with that he gives Ryu a rucksack full of strips.

[Mr_D]

"Hunger's the best spice." Ryu said, taking another of the strips. "When you're hungry enough anything tastes good."

[Jack Sarratt]

"I wouldn't know." Rebunanta said under his breath, hoping Ryu hadn't heard.

"Soooo... You have any family?"

[Mr_D]

"No. You?" He replied simply.
