I think the better pole question is who's side is Snape on? Deatheater? OotP? Or his own?

I believe he's been playing both sides against the middle, and will throw his lot in with whomever is winning. That's why his actions can be viewed as being on either side. Also, skillful writing by JKR.

I also believe that he is on his own side, who ever the victor may seem to be that will be his choice of who to go with in the end.
