It was this secret (despite the potential power it could release) that had kept Herman so short and dumb for so many long years.

The fact was that Herman had refused to eat his spinach when he was younger.

He knew, you see, even from a young age what the spinach had been doing to all the others, and he considered it better to be diminutive and dull-witted than like that.

Amazingly, even though the dog didn't much like the spinach, the dog became so strong that he was able to leap over the fence in a single bound.
