The fact was that Herman had refused to eat his spinach when he was younger.

He knew, you see, even from a young age what the spinach had been doing to all the others, and he considered it better to be diminutive and dull-witted than like that .

Once, he actually had to resort to packaging the spinach and mailing it to a friend.

Amazingly, even though the dog didn't much like the spinach, the dog became so strong that he was able to leap over the fence in a single bound.
