April 2007 Writer's Challenge

The guidelines for the Challenge are as follows :
Write a story, poem, or song that somehow incorporates the monthly challenge image, challenge title, or both. The story, poem, or song doesn’t need to be a complete work. It can just be an excerpt. Just so long as it meets the minimum word count and somehow incorporates the monthly challenge image, challenge title, or both.

As with all posts, the content of the story, poem, or song must meet Speculative Vision Forumguidelines for appropriateness.

    Any genre may be used.

For the month of April, there is no minimum word count.

You can write more than one story, poem, or song.

The end of the challenge (the deadline) will be the end of the month.

This is a writing challenge, not a contest. It’s an opportunity to share our creativity and have fun!

If you want a critique of your writing, please say so in your post.

Let the authorial mayhem continue!

This month's story title:
Over the Edge.

The Test

Dark and cold the hall
The fighter grasps his dagger
Will he win the day?

Over the edge.

Over the edge dashes a famished stare for an over real hope,

Not a mere test but a labour of the soul is the answer to ope.

Oh, how the goal becoming to the man in this curious pledge!

So over real that, alas, triumph pairs with perdition over the edge.

The Rite of Passage

I walk through a dark'n'd tunnel
'lone again through
The buzz of arrow
clank of sword
A crack of breaking bone

We enter'd in the temple ground,
an ancient holy place
Where centuries past, the weak of man
ope'd the way for evil's reign
And downfall of a god

But now at last our leaders in
our god's high temple holy
Have given us the god's own buss
to bless our cleansing quest
And help us to succeed

And I, with sword and brand held high
have come upon the bodies
Of all my friends who were with me
to destroy all unholy
And I am one

So creep along with light and blade
do I with shadow step
Eyes held wide for traps inside
the dark'n'd passageways
An extra sound ahead

I ope' the door to sanctum's core
and feel unholy rites
Have taken place for many a trace
of evil fumes a-fly
My eyes spring wide a-shock

The holy priest and paladin
whose help essential was
Now bow before the idol's floor
bodies a-splash with blood
Of virgin child

I wonder now as I look down
On bodies of the pair
Did they fall and in evil drown
Or have I gone o'er the edge?
The carved voluptuous lass is fair...
