The three companions continued in their trek northwards, passing stone ruins of ancient ages and the scars of ancient battles. The dragons came along, as if in tow behind the two marching figures and the fading shadow of Sugam as the noon day sun was passing by overhead. Soon they would reach the next town and put their little plan into action

The dragons wove a tale of the elves of Illidian who many moons past had travelled this way. They had escaped a dark evil that overpowered the land and most of its inhabitants.Into the far reaches of the forest they journeyed toward hope and what would become their new home.

The hours passed quickly as Aelicia and Varrendrake listened to the tale and got to know each other a little better. They began to relax and enjoy themselves for a change.Ariel hearing the thoughts of the bobcat, related to varrendrake that there was a lake up ahead. Grateful for a reprieve from the heat, their steps quickened as they laughed with childlike abandon toward the blue still lake.

The lake stood placid in the bright sunlight, unruffled by a non-existent breeze, and looked like a great mirror. Varrendrake took some time to strip off his armour and and plunged into the lake

"ahh, the water is great milady, should you choose to join me."

He began to swim around and take great gulps of the water. It tasted good and so nice and cool. Such a refreshing experience when compared to the long leagues spent marching through the thick grass andbeing beaten upon by the most unforgiving sun. The water would do some good

Aelicia slipped out of her long gown, resentful that she had to wear it in the first place. Romantic and wonderfully feminine, but not at all suitable for the weather. She felt a little shy and vulnerable, but longed to feel the refreshing cool water wash over her and invigerate her.She quickly joined Varrendrake, splashing water at him and laughing with the pure joy of innocence.

Starlight, Windstorm, and Tai quenched their thirst and waded out into the liquid pool of the gods thankful for the rejuvination.

Varren stepped back up onto the shore and flopped out on the grass, letting the bright sun dry his body. He was tired, not just in body bu in mind as well. He was on just another adventure, another good mission to try and make up for his past indiscretions. They had failed so greatly back then... but never again.

After some time, he stood up and redressed in his armour. light pants and shirt, thick shirt of ringmail, tunic, sword, boots and a spear. Normal wear for a crusading knight, except that he was not on any crusade... not that he knew of.

"Milady, are you going to get out of the water? We have to be on our way, soon we will be reaching the next village and we'll have food to eat. Beyond that, well, perhaps the dragons would be so kind as to give us a ride further into the north.

"har har" windstorm laughed hard. "That brings back some memories, doesn't it? We used to be mounts to knights such as yourself during the great wars of old, but I doubt you could ride one of us."

'Don't be so sure of that old one," Varren said as he looked the dragon up and down. Big creatures they were and they might have seemed intimidating to one not prepared for such a sight, but not to Varren. "Out east there were many dragons much larger than yourselves and they were far less willing to give us a ride than you. Still we took them to battle and won many victories..." He took a deep breath. "I can handle you old one, but Night Star will have to go easy with the lady as I doubt she has ever ridden a creature such as yourself before."

"Size isn't all that matters sir knight" Night Star said sweetly. "I highly doubt that the dragons you rode were as ancient or powerful as we."

"True, but they had not the experience with riders as you. I think this can work."

Aelicia was not quick to relinquish the soothing water of the lake. Slowly she made her way to shore, wrung out her hair and stepped back into her gown.

Tai shook his body vigorously, releasing the excess water from his fur.Aelicia hesitated then spoke. " Varren it's ok, you can come with us.The next town is deserted and we can get whatever we need." She stroked the leathery skin of the dragons lovingly. "We will all be safe, we remain together."

"Deserted? How can we be sure there will be food there then?"

"Only one way to find out," Wind Storm declared. "We should go there and search the town for ourselves."

"I wonder why the town is deserted, unless..." Varren turned to take off running. The village wasn't far off and he tripped and stumbled the entire way there as he rushed the whole way there to find a ruin. It had happened long ago, for the embers had long since burnt out. Their heat long since faded.

A battle had happened here, and it had something to with his people's failure in the past. Old, battle scarred banners bearing the bright sun, symbol of his old foes from the east gave proof to the vastness of their eventual failure. No wonder they didn't like them here... but this was not why they were here. Varren continued through the wreackage like it was nothing. Broken, rotting corpses gave off a putrid smell that was hard to get rid of, but he was used to it and just plodded onward. Hopefully there would be some preserves in someone's unburnt and unpillaged basement.

As he wound around another corner, he came across the monolith shape of a pair of dragon corpses. At least this place put up a defence. He looked across the rotting corpses at least a few months old. The war was over, but these dragons still bore their battle worn saddles. Now it would be much easier to ride the dragons

It was difficult enough for Aelicia coming from another time and place, but to come from a different realm altogether made it even more difficult. She wished that she would've payed more attention to her father and the elder's history lessons of this place. The one thing she did remember was that her mother was from here and it was a part of her heritage.

Startled by Varren's sudden dash forward, she sprinted after him. "Varren, wait !" Tai was already close behind him and the dragons beat their mighty wings and took flight.

The fetid odor of rotting flesh was overwhelming. Aelicia covered her nose with the hem of her gown as she looked about at the chaos and devastation. "Varren, get the saddles and dress the dragons, I'll search for provisions and a change of clothing. We need to talk later. There are secrets that you hold, secrets that haunt you and cause you much pain. I beg you for your honesty and trust dear crusader. Think on these things my friend, think long and hard.

Varren stood tall and turned slowly to face the pretty lady. "When the time comes, milady. When the time comes, you shall have answers to all your questions." He turned away and began removing the saddles from the massive dragon corpses. They would bea bit big for Wind Storm and Night Star, but they could be adjusted a bit. Varren was confident in his ability to suit up the pair, but the question remained, would they want to be suited up in a saddle that came from a long dead creature?

After the massive saddles were removed, Varren hauled the first over the Night Star, who wrinkled her nose and stuck up her head. "I know it smells bad for now, but it'll get cleaned up further north. Until then we'll have to make due." The dragon slowly acceded and accepted the saddle. Varren strapped it on her and then did the same for Wind Storm. He climbed into Wind Storm's saddle and gripped his spear in one hand while holding the reins of the saddle in the other.

They waited for the lady to return
