Dol Delius is a dwarf half-breed with tree shepherd ancestry. While the great families of the hidden dwarf citadel of Craggen Steep allow him to participate in their world, he can never escape the lowest status within that highly stratified society. When his halfling friend Milli comes up with a plan to steal the legendary Hammer of Fire he reluctantly joins in the scheme.
Once they have the hammer Milli, Dol, and their dwarf companion Brogus, flee the great mountain fortress, and head out into the world to seek their fortune. The Hammer of Fire takes them to the capital of the north, Das'von, where the energetic young First Citizen makes plans for world conquest. From there they head south to the desert known as the Sands where they meet with the legendary Black Horseman who can only ride at night and stands as the major obstacle to Corancil's plans of conquest.
In the end they find themselves pitted against the ancient elementals who fashioned the world countless eons ago and whose very essence resides inside the Hammer of Fire itself. Can fire destroy fire?
