RIP Majel Barrett-Roddenberry

Postby Merle » Fri Dec 19, 2008 2:26 pm

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry passed away yesterday, December 18, 2008. She left this life peacefully, in her sleep, surrounded by people who loved her.

A major force in the Star Trek and Andromeda series.

Rest in Peace, Majel.

Rest in peace.

This is sad news. :(

One of my favorite characters ever was Lwxanna Troi from ST:NG. And one of my favorite episodes of any Trek was the one where she was kidnapped by the Ferengi.

Some years ago she appeared at a Trek convention nearby. I went to see her. She seemed like a nice person and also seemed to appreciate the fans.

One question asked of her had to do with William Shatner. She didn't like him much. One of his books (I can't remember which one) had just been published, and she was asked if she was going to buy a copy. She said she wasn't, as she'd "hate to be the one that caused the coffers to overflow."

(Edited because I got the quote wrong the first time -- at least that's what I remember her saying.)

Shatner is known for his enormous ego and has rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way over the years, so it does surprise me that Majel didn't like him. I met her at a convention once too, shortly before Andromeda came out. She was mostly there promoting that show but also signed autographs and talked about STTNG/TOS and, of course, Gene. She was very personable and interesting.

Lwxanna Troi was a great character and she pulled it off beautifully. I think its great that she was so involved through the entire ST universe. Even the new Star Trek movie features her voice as, you guessed it, the computer. Its such a shame she didn't get to see the premiere.
