Changing Perspective

Postby Dead_Technology » Fri May 12, 2006 2:49 pm

Is it okay to change perspective in writing? Not like from one character to another, but from 1st to 3rd person? I asked an English teacher and she said there was no formal rule against it, but....I'm still hesitant. Does anyone else ever do this by accident or on purpose? :smt096

You're talking about within a work changing from "I walked to the store" to "Jason walked to the store"? I'd strongly advise against this, as the readers will more than likely find this confusing and destracting from the story. If you can do it well though, go for it. Tim O'Brien did this in The Things They Carried and to this day it's one of my favorite books, and conisdered a modern literary classic.

So while I urge you to reconsider, go right ahead and do it if you're confident in your ability to pull it off.
