Where do I start? :S

Postby JetMasta » Wed Oct 06, 2010 9:05 am

Hai. I'm new around here, :D

I've been accumulating all these idea's for a story, I have been working with these idea's for about 3 years now. And I have decided to write the story...the only problem is, I have no idea where to begin. I kno the characters, places', events- everything. I just cant find the right words or the right way to begin.

Suggestions?

Make a rough outline, then add details, then pick a scene that particularly grabs you and go for it.

Welcome to SV :)

Getting started can definitely be a challenge. Like Bmat said working on an outline may help you organize your thoughts so you can start building out the story from there. Outlines are a fantastic way to be sure you include all the major plot elements you want to feature.

Also keep in mind that you don't have to start with page one of your story. Maybe you have a great character introduction in mind already that will happen mid way into the story. Go ahead and write that part first! Writing something you are confident about gets you going so you don't feel so pressured about the beginning. I have written several chunks of stories as I felt inspired, then when the inspiration fizzles I set them aside so I can integrate them into the larger story when I get to that part.

Start writing. The outline is a good place to start. In this case I think I'd put my main headings and then A B C telling of each character, depending on how you intend to handle them- whether each experiencing the scenes, or another method.

As an example:

The town burns down:

Character A rescues his family
Character B grabs the town treasure
Character C is injured saving the elderly neighbor

Ok, should i worry about a prolouge yet?

or later down the track, because the story is a little complex at times and i want to make sure i explain things well enough.

This would be your choice. I'd do outline, detailed outline, write a bit, sketch in a rough prologue. but that's me, decide what you feel comfortable with.

The prologue and your story will probably be fluid. Don't be afraid to make changes.

you know Im a giong to pass on some advice that a wrighter gave me when I asked him how he did it.

he said "sit down and wright."

get out your typewriter put a piece of paper in it and wright, if you can't wright stare at the paper till you think of the first word.
if all you do is wright one word that day make sure it is a good word.

if you wright five pages of rubbish don't be afraid to throw them away.

have a place that is your place to wright.

wright two hours a day. every day.

don't let any thing distract you in your writing time no TV radio IM or phone call.

but most of all wright.

Another good piece of advice is to put aside what you write for a few days or a week or more and read it as though it was someone else's writing. When you aren't as involved in it, you may find errors or weaknesses.

You know, when J K Rowling started Harry Potter she re did the first chapter about 13 times, if my memory serves me correctly, so don't be afraid to try a few times./
