"A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin

Undoubtedly sitting perched at the top of all fantasy. Martin is a genius.

The Series starts with book 1. "A Game of Thrones"

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Probably my number two favorite series.

The Ender Cycle by Orson Scott Card (plus related books by same)

The best sci-fi series out there. Book 1 is "Ender's Game".

And just so long as you know, some of those single books aren't sci-fi or fantasy...

1984, White Fang is borderline fantasy, Angels and Demons,and Da Vinci Code, aren't. Letters from Earth, is just fun...

If you're going for anything, my ULTIMATE recommendations are Robin Hobb and GRRM.

Dan Brown is a good read with a fast paced story. If you like that type of pacing, John Grisham is another writer who writes stories that pull you into the action almost from the first page and keeps the storyline moving.

As far as fantasy suggestions, I'd like to suggest a couple of authors to the excellent suggestions already posted:

Terry Brooks - any of the Shannara books

R.A. Salvatore - any of his Forgotten Realms books

I def agree with Hobb, Tolkien, Leguin, Rowling and Scott Card. The rest are all pretty good, some I dont know. I've never read a Martin book so I'll have to try those out. And I have to add to your list Goodkind, C S Lewis and Brian Jaques, though some might think those for younger audiences.

That's why I like this BBS. The people here have style and taste.

Salvatore's Star Wars novel "Vector Prime" is pretty good too.

I CANNOT read Terry Brooks. Sword of Shannara ruined him in my mind. It was such an obvious LOTR rip off that I gave up on him.

@Way: Martin is excellent. And I agree Jacques is a good writer, you're refering I think to his redwall series? I have every book up until Triss.
