If the fourth installment actually happens the writers and director will have a big chore on their hands to now include a story taking place 10 years later (to maintain canon from the third) along with the new character of Will's son. People will want some closure of the romantic bond between Will and Elizabeth, which is another chore to solve. Maybe Jack will take his place after all, with the Fountain of Youth restoring Will's life.
All the publicity I've seen so far has PotC4 going off in a totally different direction. I didn't see too much left hanging at the end of PotC3. Will captained the Flying Dutchman, and apparently was carrying out his duties of ushering souls of sailors who died at sea to wherever they were supposed to be ushered to. Will came back to Elizabeth after ten years, and she has remained faithful to Will for those past ten years, so there is already a romantic closure, even if they have to wait for ten years between seeing each other. From the ending shot after the credits, it looks like their love was strong enough that those ten years did not diminish their feelings for each other.
The only things that were left dangling was "Will Jack find the Fountain of Youth?" (Which is supposed to be the "spring-board" of PotC4), and of no real consequence, "What ever happened to Captain Barbossa, The Black Pearl, Pintel and the one eyed homunculus (Ragetti)?"
But you know those Hollywood types: At this point, the real story is "secret", and PotC4 could very well start with Will stepping onto shore, and Elizabeth saying, "Will, this is not your son..." But, i rather doubt that.
