Well one of my alter egos are fifteen...and they said that their favorite book was Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card.
My imaginary friend who's slightly younger than thirteen said they liked Darren Shan's Vampire series.
And my Sub-conscious mind which is also around fifteen said they liked Raymond E. Feist, C.S. Lewis...but they all think Harry Potter is too simplistic.

K.A. Applegate
When I was that old, and a bit younger, i just devoured the KA Applegate books : Animorphs, Everworld, Remnant, etc. They're brain candy- Short and numerous.

Fantasy Man, you enjoyed Abhorsen Trilogy, but have you read Shade's Children by the same author? It's a science fiction novel for older YA. I strongly recommend it. As a bigger fan of fantasy, this is my second favourite book.
