Also, if this wizard had the power to utter a curse that would trap them in stones so that their summoner would have direct control over them, why didn't he do this beforehand so that he wouldn't have to be killed by them?

I mean, this evil wizard obviously wouldn't carry a lot of trust for them. If he's able to exact complete control, wouldn't he?

Some spells require certain things to pass that the warlock did not want to give until the moment he was going to die, mainly his freedom, for the spell affects the user as well. Power doesn't equal intelligence, and in a rather ironic twist, the spell he cast was not his first choice for controlling the Knight Masters (he was afraid it would not affect some of them due to their race or mental capabilities) but at the time, and with less blood going to his brain, it was the first thing he could think of. Now he is under control of someone who is both powerful and smart, and evil to boot. This is an important part of the story even though it abruptly appears in the quickly escalating war that the Knight Masters have been forced into.
