The Art of War by Sun Tzu

This book a the oldest military text in the world. It was written by the Chinese general Sun Tzu. I have found it to be very interesting, and highly recommend it to anyone who requires understand of ancient war fare.

The chapters cover terrain, training troops, and battle plans. It also documents how Sun Tzu and his other contemporaries won battles.

Well worth the read.

Indeed! This is one I read years ago, which has helped me to understand a lot of the 'whys' of so many battles much more clearly.

I found this for dates for Sun Tzu on Wikipedia: c. 544 – 496 BC. (As a rule, I don't like to use Wikipedia as a source, but it was quick and handy.) Apparently, he wrote The Art of War in the 6th century BC.

Would you believe, I've read my share of military history (medieval mostly), but I've never read that one? I understand it is a true classic regarding warfare.

If you guys want to know about all the old books (2000 years old, that is) read 'The Walking Drum' by Louis L'amour. He makes extensive comment of hundreds of those books. He mentions Sun Tzu, I believe.

The Art of War is a classic book that finds its advice leaping well outside of the confines of the battlefield. Its writings can easily apply to any aspect of every day life. (After all, what is life but one long series of battles, a little war in itself?) I keep a copy of it above my bed.
